Sachin Tendulkar – A Phenomenon
By Praveen Nvs: Sachin Tendulkar – the biggest sporting icon and the most adored cricketer of India has finally hung up his boots in ODI cricket, it is an extremely sad day for the cricket fans. His retirement will bring down curtains on what has been a long and a most remarkable career. It is never an exaggeration to say that he struck terror in the hearts of bowlers for more than two decades.
Tendulkar is undoubtedly the greatest ODI batsman of all time. He delivered many masterpieces with the bat and gave the Indian fans a plenty of memorable moments. The very presence of Tendulkar in the ranks is a source of great courage and the Indian team will definitely miss him! Tendulkar is a phenomenon in world cricket and is in a league of his own.
His tally of 18,426 runs and 49 tons makes him the most prolific run scorer in ODI history. His thirst for making runs was unquenchable.
His name is synonymous with batting records. That there is no cricketer who can at least come close to these numbers is a pointer to the enormity of Tendulkar’s achievement in international cricketer!
Tendulkar’s batting always had a touch of genius associated with it. The way he danced down the track and lofted the Aussie quickies in Sharjah many years ago, remains fresh in the memory of the Indian fans. Towards the end of his ODI career, he curbed his aggressive instincts and his repertoire of shots changed but the runs never stopped flowing from his bat!
His career is filled with scintillating knocks. Who can forget the spectacular performance of the Master blaster in 2003 World Cup, when he scored a mammoth 673 runs? Who can forget his double century against South Africa? Who can forget his innumerable fighting knocks? Who can forget the way in which he shattered the confidence of deadly bowlers like Akhtar, Warne etc.?
The modern generation produced many batting greats like Lara, Ponting etc. but Sachin was always miles ahead of his nearest rivals. His longevity has been amazing. To maintain top form for twenty years at the highest level takes something special.
Being the best batsman of the team, he was always under intense scrutiny and had to carry the weight of expectations of millions of fans. The effective way in which he handled the tremendous pressure on him shows his mental toughness.
