By Alex Osborne: The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) has launched an investigation into the incident between 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor and 5-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld after their World Championship Semi-Final on 30th of December 2012. ‘The Power’ was 5 sets to 1 up on Barneveld after a racing start to their Semi-Final clash but Barneveld seemingly began to relax and just play darts.
The 5-time World Champion reeled off 3 straight sets to make the score 5-4 but Taylor won the 10th set with a 68 checkout to win the match 6-4 and book his place in the 2013 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship final but it was the incident after the match that caught the media’s attention. After Taylor hit the double 16 to win the match he vigorously celebrated toward the crowd before going over to shake the hands of the markers and the caller.
He then shook Raymond van Barneveld’s hand and tried to walk off but ‘Barney’ held on to Phil’s arm and pull him toward him to give him a hug and a proper congratulations but Taylor was having none of it. Phil was visibly distressed and got mouthy toward Barneveld before walking off. The following morning, ‘The Power’ was interviewed by Sky Sports News and said that his actions were “disgraceful” and that he was completely “out of order.”
Sky Sports News then wrongly reported that Raymond van Barneveld had said that he hoped Taylor will lose his World Championship final match against Michael van Gerwen. Later on in the day, Barneveld tweeted: “Rumours saying in sky that i hope Phil loose what a joke i never said nothing i am a professional Phil and me are okay what a world pffff.” Taylor and Barneveld are usually best friends and have reportedly made up but the Darts Regulation Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
No doubt the investigation will end up with Phil Taylor receiving some sort of fine for acting unsporting but that shouldn’t really bother Taylor as he is a multi-millionaire and he has just won his 16th World Darts Championship. Both Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld will be participating in the Betfair World Cup of Darts and the McCoy’s Premier League so it will be interesting to see how they act with each other when they next face off.
