By Praveen Nvs: Skipper MS Dhoni played undoubtedly the best innings of his test career in the first match at Chennai in the ongoing test series versus Australia. Scoring a double hundred in single day requires very high quality batsmanship and Dhoni displayed just that.
The amazing power-hitter in him came to the fore and played scintillating shots with remarkable ease, much to the delight of the Indian fans. It was an innings which only the likes of Virender Sehwag would have matched for its audacity. This innings will stand as one of the greatest individual performances in the Indo-Aussie rivalry.
The Kangaroos were clueless against the rampaging Dhoni and could only helplessly watch the carnage that is being inflicted on them. By hitting 24 fours and 5 sixes, Dhoni showed why he is regarded as one of the greatest entertainers in modern cricket.
His splendid knock, which was studded with plenty of boundaries, was high on entertainment for the spectators.
His dazzling repertoire of shots stunned the Aussies and shattered their confidence. It was an absolute gem of a performance from the dynamite of Jharkhand. Such high is the impact of Dhoni’s fluent innings that Kohli’s beautifully crafted century was easily overshadowed.
The match was evenly poised until Dhoni unleashed the brutal aggressor in him. From a position of equality, the match slowly started to swing in India’s favour. Dhoni’s counter-attack clearly put India in the driver’s seat. The pace at which he got his runs is sure to leave a strong psychological impact on the Aussie bowlers.
Dhoni’s innings was a perfect mix of caution and aggression. The way he built a partnership with Bhuvaneswar Kumar, when the Australians were looking to finish off things quickly, was amazing. Dhoni’s batting had impeccable timing, wonderful hard-hitting,solid defence and almost every aspect of batsmanship. Questions have been raised about his batting ability in tests in the recent past and this sublime performance should put all of them to rest. It was an innings which even his fiercest critics will be forced to admire.
All the Aussie bowlers came under heavy fire from Dhoni’s blazing willow, but the off spinner Nathan Lyon was in for some special treatment. With the ball spinning nicely in to him, Dhoni simply massacred Lyon and plundered a lot of boundaries.
