By Aaron Herman: It is no surprise to anyone that there are widespread rumors across the internet revealing that the Miami Dolphins are interested in Mike Wallace, soon to be a former wide receiver of the Pittsburg Steelers. The Dolphins have repeatedly said that they need to bring play-makers to this team, and with Wallace’s speed, he is the definition of a play maker.
If the Dolphins are able to sign Wallace this off-season, it would give them a WR core of Wallace, Hartline (assuming he re-signs which is looking more likely), and Bess. It turns a WR group that was a laughing-stock last year, into one that will make Ryan Tannehill salivate and strike fear into the rest of the AFC East (especially if the Jets lose Revis).
It is no question Mike Wallace would instantly make the Miami Dolphins better, even with the hefty contract that he will demand. However, that is not the only reason why the Dolphins must sign Mike Wallace. The Dolphins need to sign Mike Wallace to prove to the fans that they are a desirable location for free agents and can build a successful team in South Florida.
Over the past couple years we have seen coaches and players spurn the Dolphins in the off-season. Last year the Dolphins made it very clear that Jeff Fisher was their top candidate for their head coach vacancy. He went to St. Louis.
The Dolphins then publically stated that Peyton Manning was their main focus and he would be their answer to the void Dan Marino left on this team. He went to Denver. Over the past couple years, the Dolphin’s targets seem to continually leak onto the internet, and it seems like every year those target end up on other teams.
It’s time the Dolphin’s front office change the perception of NFL free agents and make Miami a desirable free agent landing spot in the NFL.
Like how the Heat have become that type of team in the NBA, it’s time the Dolphin’s brass get their heads in the game and make Mike Wallace want to take his talents to South Beach.
