By Shane O’Brien: Floyd Mayweather (44-0-0, 26 KOs) and Saul Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) begin their eleven city tours this week to promote which has been billed as the biggest fight in modern boxing history, Mayweather who is the highest earner is sport faces the undefeated Mexican.
Canelo Alvarez is ranked highly as one of the best pound for pound fighters despite being only 22.
The pair will meet on September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, this fight is set to shatter all financial records in Boxing. The fight will be contested at a 152-pound catchweight with all four belts being on the line, pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather acknowledges that Alvarez will provide his toughest test of his career.
Mayweather holds a world title at welterweight, but he also still owns a junior middleweight title which he won by outpointing Miguel Cotto in May 2012. Mayweather returned to welterweight to defend his title against Roberto Guerrero on May 4th at the MGM Grand where Floyd won a unanimous decision.
Canelo Alvarez is coming off the back of a win against Austin Trout in April to add the WBA light-middleweight belt to his WBC title; he is widely expected to give Mayweather a tough physical test.
“The Earth is my turf,” Mayweather said. “You can put me in any ring and I will always come out victorious.”
“When you’re the best, you only push and test yourself against the best and that’s what the fans wanted to see, so it’s all about pleasing the fans and giving them what they want to see.
“The will look at the opponents that Canelo has faced and look at the opponents I have faced, you will see the big difference in experience.
“But as I’ve said before, he’s done something right to get to this point so I know he’s a guy I can’t overlook.
Saul Alvarez is confident of becoming the only fighter to have beaten Floyd Mayweather, speaking about the fight he added;
“In the sport of boxing, it’s everybody’s time, and this is my time,”
Alvarez denied that he agreed 152lbs weight limit was set upon request from his camp.
“It wasn’t me,” he said. “I don’t want to fight two pounds below my weight class. I’ve visualised this fight for years, and I feel I’m going to win.”
Both fighters have unbeaten records, there can only be one winner. Floyd or Canelo?
