South African boxer Mzwanele Kompolo has died following a first round knockout in a fight with Siphenathi Qampi in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday night.

Kompolo, 22, collapsed following the bout sanction by Boxing South Africa. He was treated at ringside before being taken to hospital in Frere, but he never regained consciousness.

This is the second death in boxing in South Africa inside a year following the death of female boxer Phindile Mwelase, which is still under investigation.

The news of Kompolo’s death was delivered by the country’s sports minister Fikile Mbalula who added;

“I am truly saddened by his passing especially during the period wherein we are still establishing the circumstances that led to the passing of the late Phindile Mwelase…on behalf of my department of Sport and Recreation, our heartfelt condolences to the family and everyone associated with the young athlete. I am confident that BSA will do everything in its power to furnish us with all details.”

This latest tragedy follows the death this week of Australian boxer David Browne in the Philippines, who was knocked unconscious in the final round of a fight.
