By Aaron Herman: The debate has raged over the years on if the NFL schedule should remain at 16 games or expand to 18 games. As I spent the weekend watching the Miami Dolphins 4th and 5th string players play the New Orleans Saints 4th and 5th string players, I thought to myself that something needs to change.
Do we really need four weeks of preseason games? Five if you count the Cowboys and Dolphins who played in the Hall of Fame Game. Players are against an 18 game schedule because they don’t want the extra stress on their bodies, but what about the preseason? The list of players who have gotten hurt in preseason games this year is long already.
Why can’t we shorten the preseason to two games and increase the regular season to 18? Are more people really going to get hurt than what we are seeing this preseason? Can’t coaches evaluate their team’s talent in practice? Do we really need a preseason game to just watch the bottom dwellers of rosters play for one or two open roster spots?
