2013 Betfair World Cup of Darts Nations Announced

By Alex Osborne: The 24 nations competing in the 2013 Betfair World Cup of Darts have been announced. This year’s World Cup gets underway on February 1st with England’s Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis as defending World Champions. The format has changed back to its original format with there being group stages and the top 2 nations at the end of the group stages qualify for the knockout stage.

The Netherlands represented by Raymond van Barneveld and Co Stompé won the inaugural World Cup of Darts back in 2010, defeating Wales in the final. England defeated Australia in an enthralling final in 2012 after all players from each nation missed doubles to win the World Cup but it was the 2-time World Champion who held his nerve and pinned double 5 to win the title for England in a sudden death leg of pairs.

Numerous players will be making their debuts in the 2013 World Cup such as ‘Mighty’ Michael van Gerwen who will represent the Netherlands alongside Raymond van Barneveld after shooting up to 4th in the PDC Order of Merit following an incredible 2012 which included winning the World Grand Prix and reaching the final of both the Grand Slam of Darts (which he lost to Barneveld) and the World Darts Championship (where he lost to Phil Taylor).

By Alex Osborne: Scott Waites destroyed Tony O’Shea to finally win the BDO World Darts Championship at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. ‘Scotty 2 Hotty’ trounced his opponent O’Shea and took an astonishing 5 sets to 0 lead. In the sixth set, Waites missed 6 darts to take a 6-0 lead and Tony O’Shea finally got a set on the board to avoid the humiliation of a whitewash.

Scott was too much for Tony though, who never really turned up on the night and he was crowned the 2013 BDO World Darts Champion. There are two organisations in the world of darts since the split back in 1992 and the PDC (Professional Darts Organisation) is widely regarded as the superior organisation because of the better quality players, higher prize money, sponsorship and television coverage.

By Alex Osborne: The 2013 McCoy’s Premier League Darts will kick off with a bang at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast as the 16-time reigning World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor will face the man he defeated to win that sweet sixteenth title, ‘Mighty’ Michael van Gerwen who will be making his Premier League debut.  Taylor trailed 2-0 and 4-2 to ‘Mighty Mike’ but he proved that he is still the greatest player on planet darts by reeling off 5 straight sets against the young Dutchman to claim his sixteenth World Title.

5-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld will take on the 2011 Premier League Champion, ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Gary Anderson in a rematch of their 2013 World Darts Championship Last 16 encounter in which Anderson was struggling badly on his doubles and ‘Barney’ breezed through to the Quarter-Finals, eventually falling to Phil Taylor.

‘The Machine’ James Wade will face the world number 5 making his debut in the Premier League, ‘The Warrior’ Wes Newton in a repeat of their 2013 World Darts Championship Quarter-Final in which Wade defeated Newton 5 sets to 4.

England’s Phil Taylor (left) and Adrian Lewis (right) were crowned World Champions in 2012.

By Alex Osborne: The World Cup of Darts is set for a return in 2013 with Betfair now sponsoring the event as opposed to Cash Converters. This year, it will be held at the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg, Germany. The inaugural PDC World Cup of Darts was held in 2010 and was won by Netherlands’ Raymond van Barneveld and Co Stompé after they defeated Wales in the final.

In 2012, it was won by England’s Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis after they edged out Australia’s Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson in the final after they all missed doubles to win the prestigious title. The 2-time World Champion Adrian Lewis eventually pinned double 5 to win the World Cup for his nation. In the World Cup, countries are represented by 2 players and they face other countries in both singles and pairs matches.

Both players from each country play one singles match against another country with the winners earning a point for their team. After that, they play one pairs match with the winning team earning 2 points for their country. If the scores are level after both of the singles matches and the pairs match, the countries will settle it with one leg of sudden death pairs.
