Barnsley vs Nottingham Forest Match Report
Nottingham Forest suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Barnsley. Mark Warburton played a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Daryl Murphy as the lone striker. The 3 at the back were tested early on and Forest were then undone by a simple ball floated into the box from a free kick that was easily headed in by Matthew Pearson after just four minutes. Forest could have been level just a minute after conceding when Daryl Murphy hit the post from a tight angle. The hosts then had countless chances to double their lead, with Jordan Smith having to make a good save after Tom Bradshaw fired his shot at the keeper. Barnsley continued to come forward but were hit on the counter attack, when Barrie McKay put in a cross that was met with an exquisite sliding header from Daryl Murphy to draw Forest level. The game was entertaining heading towards the end of the first half, with Barrie McKay and Ben Osborn putting shots wide for Forest, and Tom Bradshaw forcing Jordan Smith to tip the ball over his bar.
The second half was lively and started very much the same as the first half, with Barnsley scoring. Forest’s defence was asleep and allowed Barnsley midfielder Ryan Hedges the space to unleash a 20 yard shot that went straight into the bottom corner to give the home side the lead again. Forest again searched for an equaliser and had many opportunities to get back on level terms, with Ben Osborn putting a shot wide, Kieran Dowell failing to hit the target and Andreas Bouchalakis firing into the keepers arms. Forest had a great last minute chance with Tendayi Darikwa, who’s shot was saved well by Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies who ensured that Barnsley held on for all three points.
