Its MS Dhoni vs AB de Villiers time!
We all know how these two players are, what impact they have made in the game of cricket. Both are legends, both are extra ordinary batsmen in all forms (Test, ODI and T20) both are excellent finishers and match winners for their respective IPL teams and for their country. There is war of stats between these legends.
In tests AB’s Test numbers are certainly a notch above Dhoni’s, their ODI numbers are pretty similar and are very intriguing.
In 103 matches and 171 innings AB has scored 7950 runs at average of 51.29 with strike rate of 53.85 , he has 21 hundreds and 38 half centuries , with 917 fours and 55 sixes to his name . His highest score came against Pakistan. He scored 278* AB has shown his wicket keeping skills too despite being a non regular wicket-keeper. He has 194 catches and affected 5 stumping
On the other hand Dhoni’s has retired from test cricket a year ago his test record as test batsman is not great if it is compared to AB de Villiers. In 90 matches Dhoni has scored 4876 with average is low its only 38.09 where de Villiers has averaged 51. 29. Strike rate of Dhoni strike rate is 59.11. He has more than AB’s. This might be because Dhoni played tests more attackingly than de Villiers.
Perhaps Dhoni played test same as one day cricket. The runs Dhoni scored in 90 matches is 4876, this is lesser than what AB has scored in 103 matches 7950 runs. Dhoni played only 90 test that may be the reason behind this low score of runs. If he had played exact number of test what De villers has, then we may never know Dhoni could also have managed to score those runs.
Record of hundreds is great by de Villiers instead of Dhoni. Dhoni has scored only 6 hundreds whereas de villers has scored 21, fifties are also scored more by de villers its 38 and Dhoni has scored 33. Dhoni has scored 544 sixes and 78 fours. That also more if you see de Villiers record. Dhoni is India’s full-time wicket-keeper he caught 256 catches and affected 38 stumpings.
In ODIs both stand same , both are best finishers , both are real match winners de Villiers has played 195 matches scored 8403 with average of 54.21 and strike rate of 100.28 with 23 hundreds and 47 fifties . He has hit 743 fours and 181 sixes. His best score of 162* came in world cup 2015 against West Indies. He has record of scoring fastest 50 100 and 120. He has achieved his feat twice in his glorious career that too against the same team.
In ODI too de Villiers used to keep wickets after mark Boucher’s retirement. Again despite of being a non regular wicket-keeper AB has caught 159 catches and affected 5 stumpings.
Whereas Dhoni has played more ODI games than de Villiers. He has played 270 matches 8832 runs average of 52.26 and strike rate of 89.10. This might be because more matches Dhoni have more hundreds and fifties than de Villiers.
He has scored 9 hundreds and 6 half centuries. Sixes by Dhoni are 188 and fours are 687, Dhoni has caught 254 catches and affected 88 stumpings.
Both of these players are captain of their respective ODI teams. Both are impact players, they can turn the game around very quickly. Both these players good in building partnerships, they are quick runners between the wickets; they can convert 1 into 2s. Both are very good fielders and wicket-keepers.
In T20 there is no match between Dhoni and de Villiers.
De Villers is impact player in all formats, in t20 de viler has played 63 matches and scored 1167 runs with strike rate of 125.88 he has 104 fours and 32 sixes with best score of 79*he has 5 t20 fifties to his name, but no hundreds De Villers has also contributed in wicket keeping skills here too he has 58 catches . Dhoni has being not upto the mark in t20s.
He has played 52 matches and scored only 874 runs with no hundreds and no half centuries. Dhoni has scored only 59 boundaries and 25 sixes. In t20s Dhoni doesn’t get going as de Villiers do. Dhoni takes his time and wastes lots of balls. This might be the reason behind his ok T20 record.
Who can forget Dhoni slow batting against Sri Lanka in t20 world cup final in Bangladesh?
In T2os his captaincy skills are good , under him India won the T20 cup in south Africa in 2007
Dhoni is only behind of de Villiers because of average. In test, it’s not possible now. But in ODIs and T20 he has a chance to improve.
In tests and T20 de Villiers is better than Dhoni. At least the stats show this way. In one day internationals they both are evenly poised.
