By Niles Pender: The 2012 London Olympics will draw many of the top athletes from around the world to the UK to participate in the 302 events in the Games of the XXX Olympiad.

Athletes from more than 200 countries will compete in 26 sports for gold medal glory.

As the world prepares to watch two weeks of supreme competition, one of the big questions is: Which country will win the most medals?

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the United States won the most medals overall, taking 110.

However, host nation China was a close second, earning 100 medals. China actually topped the U.S. in gold medals, 51 to 36.

2012 London Olympics Swimming Trials

By Niles Pender: The Olympic trials are over across the globe. Only a few days from now, swimmers will take their marks and prepare to dive into the pool, attempting to achieve lasting glory as the next Michael Phelps…or the current one.

There are 17 total men’s swimming events during the 2012 Olympics. 16 of these events will take place at the London Aquatics Centre from July 28th until August 4th. There is also an additional open water swimming competition on August 10.

So, there will be a grand total of 17 gold medal winners in men’s swimming at the 2012 Olympics. Here are the predicted winners in every race.

100 Greatest Sports Stars – Number 88 – Janet Evans

Coming in at number 88 on our list of the top one hundred sports stars is the American swimmer, Janet Beth Evans. Born in 1971, Evans specialised in distance freestyle and gained herself the nickname Miss Perpetual Motion.

Little wonder – Evans was setting national age records by the age of eleven and even now is preparing a comeback for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Brought up in Placentia, California she started to swim at competitions at an early age. Although she devoted a great deal of time to her swimming she still managed to complete a degree in communication at the University of Southern California. Here she is winning the 800 meters freestyle at the 1988 Olympics.

Written by Jess Spate: Think scuba and you probably see a mental picture of a tropical reef, with tiny fish in all colours of the rainbow and maybe a giant clam or a sea turtle or two.

For most divers and snorkelers, warm seas are the favourite destinations- you get the sun and the sand, and the wildlife is a lot brighter and more diverse than in temperate or cold waters. Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef is home to more than 400 different fish species and about 250 different corals, for example. In summer the water gets up to a balmy 28C or 82F.

But not everyone longs for easy diving in a tropical paradise. The sport of ice diving is increasingly popular and scuba enthusiasts are slowly beginning to turn towards colder climates.
