Nottingham Forest only just scraped past Shrewsbury Town 2-1 to confirm a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Mark Warburton made eleven changes from the team that beat Millwall 1-0 on Friday. New signings Andreas Bouchalakis, Jason Cummings and Kieran Dowell all made their first starts for Forest.

Forest started the game brightly with Greek striker Apostolos Vellios putting a shot over the bar, before Jason Cummings saw his shot come back off the bar. Mustapha Carayol was a bright spark for Forest down the left side and was rewarded after 29 minutes when his tricky feet forced Abu Ogogo into a foul that resulted in a penalty for The Reds, Carayol dispatched the penalty coolly to the right, sending Shrewsbury keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way. Shrewsbury began to get into game towards the end of the first half, forcing Forest keeper Dimitar Evtimov into some fine saves. Shrewsbury Midfielder Arthur Gnahoua forced Evtimov to tip the ball over the bar after connecting well with a cross.

The second half followed the same pattern, with both teams having chances, Forest looking for another goal to kill the game off and Shrewsbury looking for an equaliser. The game was still evenly poised until the 75th minute when Mustapha Carayol played a through ball to Jason Cummings who beat the offside trap and finished emphatically to double Forest’s lead. Forest’s two goal cushion lasted only a meagre 4 minutes after debutant Andreas Bouchalakis brought down Niall Ennis in the box to gift the visitors a penalty. Shaun Whalley took the spot kick and scored, which set Forest up for a nerve racking final eleven minutes. In the 94th minute Dimitar Evtimov produced a superb stop from an Alex Rodman header to ensure Forest progressed to the next round.
