In this article, we will take a look at 5 boxing matchups that we must see in 2021 including Joshua vs Fury: An All-British Mega Undisputed heavyweight clash between Unified World Champion Anthony Joshua and #1 heavyweight Tyson Fury. Additionally, we will look at the much anticipated American Welterweight clash between Errol Spence and Terence Crawford and much more
Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury
British Fight Fans have been waiting a long time for Joshua vs Fury. Ever since Fury Dethroned Klitschko in Germany and Joshua beat Martin for the IBF strap, Joshua vs Fury has been discussed and now in 2021, it could come to fruition. Promoters Bob Arum and Eddie Hearn are confident that the Joshua vs Fury fight will take place next and twice in 2021 no matter what, with or without the belts.
Joshua vs Fury is a must-see matchup in 2021 as it will hopefully crown an undisputed champion (all being well with the (WBO) and firmly establish a #1 Heavyweight. As well as this, Joshua vs Fury is vital to British Boxing, Sport and Culture. It is a massive event in the midst of a global pandemic even if it does take place in the Middle East and will help popularise Boxing even more in the UK.
Errol Spence vs Terence Crawford
Errol Spence vs Terence Crawford has been marinated for almost 5 years and we are still no closer to the fight. The single major obstacle in the making of Spence vs Crawford is the Percentage splits. Errol Spence believes that he deserves 60/40 or even 70/30 in a clash with Crawford as he is ‘the clear a-side’.
Spence argues that he has headlined 3 PPV’s as the A-side and accumulated a combined 900,000+ buys while Crawford’s 2 appearance’s on Pay-Per-View have done a meagre 200,000 buys in comparison. Spence is also a massive ticket seller in Texas selling a reported 47,500 tickets for his fight against Mikey Garcia in Texas. In addition, he has 2 world titles to Crawford’s WBO Belt.
It is very unlikely that Spence backs down or Crawford accepts anything but 50/50. One of them will have to compromise in their demands to make the fight or Crawford will have to do something to deserve 50/50. This could be a big unification fight with Pacquiao that would give him a second belt and an appearance on PPV against a large audience. There were advanced talks for this fight pre-pandemic.
Teofimo Lopez vs Gervonta Davis
Teofimo Lopez, Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney are 3 elite lightweights that are all 25 or younger, world champions and already at the pinnacle of the sport. With Haney tied up with 2 WBC Mandatories in 2021, we must see the two pound-for-pound lightweight world champions clash.
Teofimo Lopez won his first Belt against Richard Commey last year with a quick devastating knockout and then pulled off a massive shock when he beat Vasyl Lomachenko to unify 4 belts. Davis is a two-weight, 4-time world champion and made a massive statement in October with a Knockout of the Year contender against 4-weight champion Leo Santa Cruz in his PPV Debut.
Lopez and Davis are young, exciting and commercially lucrative stars at the top of the game and an unprecedented clash between these two fighters this early in their career could make for an all-exciting super-fight and the birth of a new superstar in Boxing. Lopez-Davis is a treat for all boxing fans if it happens as early as 2021.
Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol
Artur Beterbiev was scheduled to defend his IBF Crown against mandatory Adam Deines on January 30 but pulled out with Covid. Since he and Bivol have both not fought in 15 months it is highly unlikely they fight each other next. Instead, we hope that they both have one interim fight than clash at the end of 2021.
Beterbiev has another option in the form of the winner of Smith/Vlassov who are both with his promotional company Top Rank but it is likely that the winner of Smith/Vlassov will have Umar Salamov as immediate mandatory. So Boxing fans hope for the All-Russian clash between Beterbiev and Bivol in the fourth quarter of 2021 and the winner going for undisputed in 2022.
Josh Taylor vs Jose Ramirez
Alongside Joshua vs Fury, Jose Ramirez vs Josh Taylor is the easiest bout on this list to make in 2021 and negotiations are almost complete with a May date eyed for this undisputed clash at a 140-pounds. Top Rank’s Bob Arum has reiterated though that this clash will not happen without fans and they are waiting for a date where they can allow fans back into arenas. (Most Likely MGM Grand, Las Vegas with 10,000 spectators)
Taylor vs Ramirez is a real 50/50 clash on paper. They are both unified world champions with very similar resumes and fighters in the prime of their career. Most favour Taylor due to his skilled-inside fighting, power and boxing pedigree. However, Jose Ramirez is a strong and ferocious puncher especially to the body and applies relentless pressure; Ramirez should not be at all overlooked.
