Benfica – Winners of the 2019 International Champions Cup

Benfica have won the International Champions Cup 

The defending Liga NOS Champions of Portugal have started their season in celebratory mode by winning their first tournament of this season. Last season ended with Benfica winning their 37th Portuguese League title. This season they will be adding the International Champions Cup trophy to their museum in Lisbon.

The tournament in which every team plays three games made of 18 teams, Benfica ended up going undefeated in winning all three of their games against Chivas, AC Fiorentina and AC Milan.

Chivas 0 – 3 Benfica

The first match against Chivas was in San Jose, CA in which the Eagles of Lisbon started the tournament strong with a 3-0 victory at Levi’s Stadium.

Benfica 2 – 1 AC Fiorentina 

The next match up would be a thrilling late winning goal against AC Fiorentina in New Jersey as Caio Lucas scored a rocket of a goal in extra time at Red Bull Arena.

AC Milan 0 – 1 Benfica

Their last game of the tournament was in front of the biggest crowd of the three games and the Benfica fans went home happy as they defeated Milan with a second half goal to end the tournament with 3 straight victories.

The team will be also playing in next year’s tournament as the defending champion and this will mark the fourth time Benfica will be competing in the ICC tournament.

Benfica will also be facing rival Sporting CP in the Portugal Super Cup on Sunday August 4th with an opportunity to raise a third trophy to go with the Liga NOS, International Champions Cup in the calendar year of 2019.
