Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders will clash in a 3-belt 168-Pound Unification Fight on Cinco De Mayo Weekend or May 8 as May 5 falls on a Wednesday. Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders will be the second of the two-fight deal Canelo signed with Matchroom. The First fight was the WBC Mandatory Defence: against Avni Yildirim on February 27 in Miami.
Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders will be streamed Globally on DAZN with the exception of Canelo’s native Mexico. Canelo will unify his WBA (Super) and WBC Titles with Saunders WBO Strap. Canelo-Saunders was agreed to take place on Cinco De Mayo 2020 and on the verge of being announced but scrapped due to the pandemic. Saunders now gets another shot at the P4P King.
Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders does not have a solid venue as of yet due to Canelo’s fighting home being Las Vegas and the availability of a crowd is still uncertain for May in Las Vegas. The Plan is still to go to Las Vegas though and potential venues being explored are the Allegiant Stadium and MGM Grand (which is available due to Taylor-Ramirez being moved to May 22).
If LV does not allow crowds, they will go to whichever state will allow as many spectators as possible for Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders which will be either Texas (where Canelo faced Callum Smith) or Miami (Where Canelo Fough Avni Yildirim). Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders was planned to be announced with both men in the ring on February 27 after Canelo-Yildirim but Billy Joe Saunders was unable to make the trip.
Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders: WBA, WBC, WBO Super Middleweight World Titles
Canelo Alvarez made his Super Middleweight debut back in 2018 when he stopped Rocky Fielding in just 3 rounds to claim the WBA (Regular) 168-Pound title on his DAZN debut. However, at this time he was still moving around the weights, but in 2020 he decided that he was going to settle at Super-Middleweight for the time being and attempt to become an undisputed champion there.
This Journey was meant to being with Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders on Cinco De Mayo 2020 but due to the pandemic, it instead began with the Ring Magazine Champion and #1 SMW Callum Smith (29-0) who he dismantled and dominated in a convincing 12-round points win to claim the WBA (Super) and Vacant WBC Titles. He now has two belts left to win and he plans to conquer those champions in 2021.
He will start that journey with another Brit in the form of WBO Super Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders (28-0). Saunders has won world titles at two different weights and is considered by many as the best boxer pound-for-pound in the UK and the toughest test available for Canelo at 160/168. Despite this, he is yet to face the elite opposition and takes a huge leap in levels when he faces Canelo in May.
Saunders, unlike the other champions, isn’t big or even a natural super middle and many feel his skills are best-shown middleweight but due to the opportunities being available at 168 he was forced to move up. What Saunders does possess that the other champions don’t is that slick, slippery southpaw style that Canelo has struggled with in the past and is very awkward and difficult for any fighter to overcome.
But before Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders takes place, Canelo will have to get past mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida on February 27. Should he be able to do so he will be in a position to become an undisputed champion at a 168-pounds by the end of 2021 and move on to bigger and better things in 2022. -An opportunity he might not have got if he wasn’t a free agent.
