Canelo vs Saunders: P4P King, the face of boxing and WBA/WBC Super Middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (55-1-2) takes on Undefeated WBO Titleholder Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders (30-0) in a 3-belt ‘monstrous’ unification in tomorrow’s main event at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Dallas, Texas.
For the first time since the pandemic hit in March 2020, a full crowd will be allowed at a sporting venue in the United States. Canelo vs Saunders will break the Muhammad Ali vs Leon Spinks indoor stadium record for a boxing crowd which was 63,000. Canelo vs Saunders is expected to have a sell-out of 70,000 fans tomorrow in Texas.
This fight comes as a result of Canelo signing a two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and DAZN where Canelo vs Saunders will be streamed globally (except for Mexico). This is a big statement for DAZN in the UK market ahead of a potential huge boxing deal in the summer.
Canelo vs Saunders: Fight Preview
The First fight of the deal saw Canelo Alvarez take on WBC Mandatory Challenger Turkey’s Avni Yildirim (21-2) just 10 weeks after Canelo’s dominant performance over #1 Super Middleweight and WBA (Super) Champion Callum Smith (29-0). An overwhelmed Yildirim offered little before retiring on the stool after round 3.
Canelo now faces arguably the toughest test since GGG and the biggest challenge available at 160/168 pounds. Billy Joe Saunders has the reflexes, style and speed to make it a very difficult night for Canelo. We are expecting the best of Billy Joe Saunders as he is coming off a fight in December and over 16 weeks of preparation including an ‘ideal training camp’.
Saunders informed the media that training camp for him is usually ‘fat loss camp’ as he would start at over 190 pounds and the main aim would be to make weight instead of improving his boxing ability. However, this time he didn’t blow up in weight and was marginally over the weight as far as 4 weeks away from the fight.
Saunders will need a career-best performance to have a chance at beating Canelo who has faced only the elite opposition for the better part of a decade and constantly improves with every fight. He is arguably reaching the prime of his career. Billy Joe needs to start fast, frustrate Canelo early and build up a strong lead to have any chance. He’s got everything going against him in Texas.
