Dan Azeez is the latest instalment of Prospects to Watch.
Prospects to Watch is a series where I will analyse the best prospects in world boxing and review their potential as well as future fights.
Dan Azeez is (12-0, 8 KOs) in his professional boxing career and is the reigning English Light Heavyweight Champion. He formerly held the Southern Area Title in 2019. The 31-year old resides in and fights out of Lewisham, London. He is managed by MTK Global and has worked with the world-renowned boxing company since turning Pro.
Dan Azeez: The Early Life
Dan Azeez was born on the 30th of August, 1989 in London, England and is of Nigerian origin. Like Mikael Lawal, he was a late starter to boxing and only had his first amateur bout at the age of 19 through his Essex University Affiliation. Azeez is a very bright individual and has a Bachelors degree in Accounting and Finance as well as a Masters and works in that industry outside of boxing.
Azeez was successful in his 9-year amateur stint having 60 amateur bouts with around 40 wins. He was ABA South of England champion three times and a finalist in the ABA Nationals. As well as this, he won the Haringey Box Cup and the Odivelas Box Cup. Azeez was a member of Team GB and regularly sparred Domestic and Amateur Stars Lawrence Okolie and Joshua Buatsi as well as Danny Dignum.
The Rise Through The Ranks
After success in the amateurs and sparring with top-level fighters, Azeez opted to turn professional in 2017 at the age of 27 and did so with MTK Global. Azeez made his professional debut in December 2017 at the Brentwood centre where he dropped his opponent and collected a dominant points win. In just his sixth contest he fought veteran Charles Adamu over the six-round distance in a valuable learning fight.
Due to his age, he did not want to have too many easy touches and was eager to be tested soon. Azeez had 7 contests before boxing in an 8-rounder for the first time against Croatian Josip Perkovic who had extended Hosea Burton and Steven Ward 8 challenging rounds. Azeez became only the second fighter to stop him out of a list of talented undefeated prospects.
Prospect to Contender
In his 9th contest, Azeez stepped up in a 50/50 light heavyweight contest. He would get a massive opportunity on a big platform to face Dillian Whyte stablemate, Charlie Duffield, for the Southern Area Title. At the 02 Arena on Sky Sports Box Office, Azeez stopped Duffield in the sixth to claim his first professional title.
Azeez would again test himself against fellow undefeated Lawrence Osueke on an MTK Show in December 2019 where won a hard-fought contest over 10 rounds. Azeez was scheduled to make the first defence against Andre Sterling on March 20 but that was cancelled due to the pandemic. Instead, he fought Sterling as Chief support to the British and Commonwealth titles in Septemeber.
He scored another TKO win. Dan Azeez, at 31 wants to progress quickly and needs a big 2021. His next contest will be against Ricky Summers in a British Title Eliminator. Should Azeez win that he would target British champion Craig Richards as well as Commonwealth champion Lyndon Arthur, Anthony Yarde and others.
The domestic scene at 175 is packed with a plethora of talent and Azeez is a great addition to it. For further updates about his career follow Dan Azeez on Social Media:
