The Purse Bids for Demetrius Andrade vs Liam Williams were supposed to take place today via the BBBofC but a deal was reached between both parties at the final hour. Andrade’s promoter Eddie Hearn will promote the mandatory defence: Demetrius Andrade vs Liam Williams which was first ordered over a year ago in the United States on DAZN.
Hearn has stated that he will host the fight in April and through an exclusive source World in Sport has learned that April 17 is the proposed date for this fight on DAZN but is subject to change. Devin Haney has also been slated for this date to make a mandatory defence of his title either against Ryan Garcia or Javier Fortuna.
Liam William’s is represented by Rival UK Promoter Frank Warren who has struggled to work with Hearn in the past but World in Sport has learned that William’s Management the recently controversial MTK Global were instrumental in the deal as they have been for several other fights. Demetrius Andrade vs Liam Williams is the second time MTK have played a role in agreeing on terms for an Andrade fight with the first being, Billy Joe Saunders, in 2018.
Demetrius Andrade vs Liam Williams: WBO Middleweight Championship
Demetrius Andrade (29-0) first became world champion back in 2013 when he beat the undefeated 33-0 Vanes Martirosyan to claim the vacant title in what many see as his best win to date. He made just the one defence before being stripped off the title. He became a two-time champion by winning an impressive, comfortable split-decision over champion Jack Culcay in Germany.
After struggling to land the big fights (notably Jermall Charlo), he moved up to the action-packed 160-Pound weight class where he should have had his coming out fight against Billy Joe Saunder but a failed test meant he had another ‘easy touch’ to claim the vacant Middleweight Championship. Since he has made 3 defences of his title and headlined four events in a row on DAZN but still not had a career-defining victory.
Most People in the USA have never heard of Williams and consider him another ‘cherry-pick’ or easy fight for Andrade but those of us in the UK who are aware of Williams know that this is Andrade’s toughest test to date and Andrade goes into Demetrius Andrade vs Liam Williams with a significant chance of losing.
Liam Williams has been a different fighter since he suffered back to back defeats to Liam Smith and moved up to the Middleweight division. He has become more powerful, more explosive and more dynamic making him an elite contender at the weight class. Williams is on a 7-fight win and KO streak since moving up in weight and looks to continue that in April.
In the process, Williams has picked up the British and WBC Silver Titles in dominating performances. In December 2019, he stopped the previously unstopped and ex-Demetrius Andrade opponent Alantez Fox who floored Andrade in their fight in 2017 to win a WBO Title Eliminator and claim the mandatory position to Andrade.
Andrade doesn’t see this as a big fight or a step-up which could be heavily dangerous considering the ability and determination of Williams and could be upset in April. His inability to land significant clashes has demotivated him and Williams could put an end to his search one and for all.
