Joshua Fury, Spence Crawford and Davis Lopez are some of the mega fights we want to see in boxing in 2021, but what fights do we want to see at a lower level and a smaller scale? Kelly vs Benn? In this article, we will explore the 3 biggest All-British Domestic level (British/Commonwealth Title) fights that can be made this year including the Welterweight Blockbuster: Kelly vs Benn.
Kelly vs Benn
When Conor Benn turned professional no one fathomed the idea of putting him in with 2016 olympian and the talented Josh Kelly. However, after tough learning fights including several knockdowns against Cedrick Peynaud and hard work Benn has narrowed the levels in gaps. Benn surprisingly dominated tough German and top-15 Welterweight Sebastian Formella in November.
As a result, many people now see Conor Benn as a favourite in Kelly vs Benn which is incomprehensible in some fans eyes due to the extended pedigree and talent of Kelly. Kelly vs Benn is now a 50/50 Blockbuster Welterweight contest. Eddie Hearn has said if Kelly can come through David Avanesyan for the European Title and Benn can have one more fringe world-level win, he would make the fight next.
Kelly vs Benn is a very marketable fight and in the possibility of crowds would be able to sell out the 02. It is also being explored as a PPV fight on Sky Sports Box Office. The winner of Kelly vs Benn would elevate themselves into world level and be heavily marketable in the UK. British Boxing fans really look forward to Kelly vs Benn in the Summer of 2021.
Fowler vs Fitzgerald 2
Anthony Fowler vs Scott Fitzgerald was much anticipated when it took part on a Liverpool Undercard in March 2019. There was a heavy build-up with clear bad blood. Fitzgerald went on to beat Fowler by Split-Decision after a final round knockdown sealed the win. With the excitement and drama of the first contest, the time in between and development of both fighters; it will only be so much bigger.
Fowler vs Fitzgerald 2 has had many obstacles due to out of the ring problems for Scott Fitzgerald and discipline issues that have kept him from fighting and training at full intensity since he won the British title. It was originally planned for them to both box on March 7 at the Manchester Arena and then rematch at Liverpool or Preston on a pencilled in date of July 18.
However, after Fitzgerald not being prepared for the tune-up, it seemed unlikely to take place in July and was eventually postpone by the pandemic. It is now likely for the fight to take place at the end of 2021 at the earliest with Fitz needing at least 2 more fights prior and Fowler already scheduled to box in the spring again.
Bentley vs Cash
Felix Cash stopped Jack Cullen in round 8 of their fight of the year contender in November 2019 to claim the Commonwealth Middleweight Strap. Since then he has made a defence of his title against Jason Wellborn in the main event of Fight Camp 3 and now looks too big domestic clashes in 2021 and building his profile commercially.
In addition to this, Cash is mandatory to the British title held by Denzel Bentley. Bentley drew with Mark Heffron in an exciting collision in September. In the rematch, he punished Heffron before forcing him to retire on his stool and claimed the prestigious British Title. Although Cash is mandatory to Bentley and it is a British/Commonwealth title Unification, he may opt to skip straight to European level.
Bentley and Cash are both undefeated, exciting, emerging Middleweight contenders and a fight between them would be a 50/50 collision of fighters early in their career. As well as this it would establish a Domestic level king at Middleweight and allow the opportunity for them to move on to European and Fringe World Level in 2021. Bentley-Cash would be an Epic Battle if we can have it as early as 2021.
