Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that Lionel Messi and three other players have tested positive for Coronavirus.

Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico and Nathan Bitumazala will join Messi in isolation and will miss their French Cup clash with Vannes on Monday, however, subsequent negative results could see the quartet return for their fixture against Lyon next Sunday.

From Monday, fully vaccinated people in France who test positive will only have to isolate for seven days regardless of the coronavirus variant they were infected with, but can leave quarantine after five days if they show an antigen or negative PCR test.

France has suffered from a Coronavirus surge in recent weeks, recording over 200,000 cases in 24 hours for the fourth day in a row.

Speaking on the situation, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “The team will be competitive, the absentees are not an excuse, we’ll be ready for this game. We’re not thinking about the other games yet, we’re focused on Vannes. We know that the players will have the right attitude on the pitch, no matter what the lineup is because that’s what we want to be and show.”

34-year-old Messi, who arrived from Barcelona in August, has scored six goals in 16 games in all competitions this season.

There was a further medical update for Neymar Jr, who will continue his treatment in Brazil for another week with members of the PSG medical and performance staff. His return to training is still expected to be in about three weeks.
