Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing have today unveiled their next series of UK boxing shows. Matchroom Boxing has been waiting for the approval of the BBBofC due to their banning of boxing in the UK in January but has now announced that they will allow for Boxing to resume in mid-February.
Matchroom Boxing will run 5 fight nights in the UK from February 13: Warrington vs Lara to April 10: Benn vs Vargas. All of them will be exclusively on DAZN globally, except for the UK where four out of the five will be available on Sky Sports and Povetkin Whyte 2 on March 6 on Sky Sports Box Office.
The Five Fight Announcement features the much anticipated heavyweight rematch between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin, a world featherweight title defence from Josh Warrington, Okolie-Glowacki for the WBO Cruiserweight title and several other hotly-anticipated domestic title fights.
Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara: IBF Featherweight Title; February 13
Josh Warrington (30-0) headlines the Matchroom boxing opening show defending his IBF Featherweight Title against Mexican Mauricio Lara (21-2). Warrington was originally meant to unify against Can Xu but travel issues and the WBA title being on the line meant that had to be postponed.
On chief support, Zelfa Barrett (24-1) takes a step-up in opposition as he battles Spanish veteran Kiko Martinez (41-9). Barrett signed with Matchroom early last year and spectacularly knocked out Eric Donovan at fight camp. Martinez is a former IBF world champion and boxed at the top level at two different weights.
Additionally, Leigh Wood (23-2) takes on Reece Mould (13-0) for the vacant British Featherweight Title. This fight has been ordered by the BBBofC and is a really competitive fight. Dalton Smith (6-0) who overcame Nathan Bennett at fight camp steps-up again against Lee Appleyard (16-5). Hopey Price and Shannon Courtney also boxing on the card.
Josh Kelly vs David Avanesyan: European Welterweight Title; February 20
Headlining the Matchroom Boxing February 20 card is the rescheduled European title fight between 2016 Olympian Josh Kelly (10-0) and Russia’s David Avanesyan (26-3) which was supposed to happen January 30.
Liverpool’s Anthony Fowler (13-1) fights Spanish Boxer Jorge Fortea (21-2) on chief support over 10 rounds. In addition to this, we see the rematch between Amy Timlin (4-0) and Carly Skelly (3-0) for the commonwealth super bantamweight title. The pair drew on October 31 on the Usyk-Chisora Undercard.
Heavily popular Albanian Florian Marku (7-0) takes on Rylan Charlton (6-0) in a heavily anticipated 50/50 welterweight clash over 10 rounds. Charlton upset Joe Laws in October and impressed doing so. He now takes on another Matchroom prospect. FULL PREVIEW
New S-Jam boxing and Matchroom signing Johnny Fisher makes his pro debut. Plus More to be announced.
Alexander Povetkin vs Dillian Whyte 2: Heavyweight Rematch; March 6
Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte rematch in the main event of the March 6 PPV Show. This is for the WBC Interim belt and is the result of Povetkin’s brutal Knockout of the year left-uppercut that saw him pull off a huge upset over Dillian Whyte in Week 4 of Fight Camp.
Lawrence Okolie vs Krzysztof Glowacki: WBO Cruiserweight Title; March 20
On the March 20th Matchroom Boxing Headliner Lawrence Okolie (14-0) fights Poland’s Krzysztof Głowacki (31-2) for the vacant WBO cruiserweight title. The former British, Commonwealth and European champion last fought on the AJ-Pulev card where he was supposed to take on Glowacki but a positive covid test from Glowacki left that delayed.
On chief support, Chantelle Cameron (13-0) defends her WBC Super Lightweight World Title against Melissa Hernandez (23-7). Cameron won her title in her first Matchroom boxing fight as chief support to Buatsi Calic. Hernandez is a former world champion but is 40 years old and far from her best.
Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion Chris Billam Smith (11-1) takes on undefeated English cruiserweight champion and British Title mandatory Deion Jumah (13-0) in a rescheduled contest. Billam-Smith Jumah was meant to happen November 21 but did not take place due to medical reasons. It will be for the Commonwealth and Vacant British Cruiserweight Title.
Joe Cordina and Ramla Ali also return on the card. Solomon Dacres makes his pro debut.
Matchroom Boxing Finale: Conor Benn vs Samuel Vargas; April 10
In the April 10 Matchroom Boxing Finale, Conor Benn (17-0) takes another step-up in the form of Canadian-Columbian Samuel Vargas (31-6). Benn dominated Formella on November 21 and now steps up the levels again before a heavily anticipated domestic clash with Josh Kelly. Vargas is the former NABA welterweight champion and extended Vergil Ortiz 7 rounds in July.
On co-main, we see a rematch between Shannon Courtenay (6-1) and Rachel Ball (7-1) for the vacant World Boxing Association World Female Bantam Title. Courtenay was upset by Ball at fight camp and now gets her chance at revenge.
On the undercard, Savannah Marshall (9-0) will defend her WBO Middleweight Title against an undetermined opponent. Commonwealth Middleweight champion Felix Cash (13-0) and Bantamweight contender Kash Farooq (14-1) will also box on the card.
