McGeady debut + Distin return = A win-win for Toffees

New Everton signing and Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady will be given his Everton debut on Monday night’s game against West Bromwich Albion, Roberto Martinez has said today.

The Irish winger signed for the Toffees earlier this week from Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee, and has been working hard in training and getting to know his teammates in Tenerife.

Everton boss Martinez has revealed that McGeady is not yet at his prime condition, although the Spaniard believes that the 27 year-old winger has shown satisfactory fitness levels to be included in the West Brom fixture.

“Aiden was able to spend 24 hours a day with everyone in Tenerife, getting to know the staff and the way we worked. He’s a player who has been de-trained in the last few weeks because he hasn’t been doing any group work. It’s been like a mini pre-season for him and now he is ready to have an impact on the team straightaway. He will be available [for Monday]. I wouldn’t expect him to have 90 minutes but I do feel he is ready to be part of the group.” Martinez has stated as he has returned back to Finch Farm yesterday evening.

On another positive note, highly rated and highly experienced Everton centre-back Sylvain Distin will return to the squad in time for the Monday night match. The 36 year old has been going through the paces this week in Tenerife in time for Monday night’s fixture. The veteran has been nursing a hamstring problem and has missed Everton’s last 3 games, though he hasn’t been truly missed as the excellent combination of John Stones and summer signing Antolin Alcaraz has proved excellent cover for the missing duo of Captain Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin. Phil Jagielka is still currently nursing a hamstring problem, however, Sylvain Distin will come straight back into the squad as cover man Antolin Alcaraz has picked up a knock during Everton’ 2-0 win over Norwich City.
