Sandor Martin vs Kay Prospere headlines Matchroom Boxing’s second show in Spain on March 26 live and exclusive on DAZN. Matchroom Boxing made their promotional debut in Spain in Barcelona in December 2019 with a stacked card featuring multiple European title fights but due to the pandemic have been unable to come back there since.
They now return with an even better show promoted as the ‘UK vs Spain’ featuring 2 European Title Fights and their new signing EBU Super Lightweight Champion Sandor Martin. The Sandor Martin vs Kay Prospere card features the best boxing talent in Spain and UK fighters looking for a second opportunity including two-time world title challenger and ex-European champion Gavin McDonnell.
On Chief Support, McDonnell challenges defending European Featherweight Champion and Spanish native Andoni Gago for his crown. Additionally, we see the return of Undefeated WBC#2 and European Super-Welterweight Champion Sergio Garcia who beat Ted Cheeseman in 2019. Kerman Lejarraga who boxes at the same weight also returns in a separate contest
Sandor Martin vs Kay Prospere: European Super Lightweight Championship
Sandor Martin vs Kay Prospere is an interesting and unexpected clash to headline Matchroom’s return to Spain. It doesn’t seem to be that difficult of a challenge for Matchroom’s new signing Sandor Martin (37-2) and should be a relatively simple win for Martin.
Prospere (14-1) is 36 years old and the reigning English Super-Lightweight champion. He won the title from his rematch victory over Sam O’maison in 2019 and has made the one defence against Bilal Rehman over a year ago in his latest fight.
Prospere is not the same level as Martin or as experienced even though he is older and doesn’t have anything that should realistically trouble Sandor Martin. A win here for Martin could set-up a fight with another Brit such as Golden Contract Tournament Winner Ohara Davies that could prove to be a more difficult challenge.
Andoni Gago vs Gavin McDonnell: European Featherweight Title
Gavin McDonnell picked up a plethora of belts on his come-up including the British, European and WBC Silver titles demolishing domestic opposition such as Leigh Wood and Josh Wale. He came short for the first time in his career via Majority Decision against Tough Mexican Rey Vargas (28-0) for the WBC World Title.
After two comeback fights, he beat another undefeated domestic rival in Gamal Yafai (14-0) to claim the WBC International title and defended it against Stuart Hall in the next fight to earn himself another world title opportunity. This time he had to travel to America to fight WBA Champion Danny Roman. Roman and McDonnell engaged in a 50/50 war that ended when Roman scored a TKO in the tenth.
That was in 2018 and since then McDonnell has only had the two comeback fights and hasn’t boxed in almost 18 months. He has now signed with MTK moves up in weight to challenge reigning Euorpean Champion, Spain’s Andoni Gago (24-3-3).
Gago’s only notable fight came in a ninth-round stoppage defeat to Lee Selby in 2017. He Picked up the European title via split-decision against Jesus Sanchez in 2019 and has yet to defend it. A win against McDonnell on the Sandor Martin vs Kay Prospere card would Pummell him up the levels and guarantee him a big fight and another opportunity but he even as a champion comes in a big underdog.
