Sarfraz Ahmed has showcased his talent yet again. The Pakistani wicket-keeper batsmen gracefully accepted the opportunity of opening the innings.
He was accompanied by the inexperienced Awais Zia who is known for his big hitting but it is felt that we are yet to see his full potential. Both Zia and Ahmed managed to score a partnership of fifty-one runs before Zia was to be run out due to some very mediocre running.
Pakistan only had to chase a score of 135 but the running between the wickets gave the impression that it was a total well in excess of 170. The in-form Hafeez did not succeed in carrying on his good form from the test series he also threw away his wicket due to a misjudged single.
Amongst the chaos Sarfraz Ahmed continued to keep the scoreboard ticking, he was not interested in taking any quick singles he was more interested in muscling the ball over the boundary for six. He soon bought up his fifty by dispatching Corey Anderson for a huge six, in an over that cost the New Zealand side 17 runs.
Sarfraz Ahmed was showing the New Zealand openers how it should be done. After being put into bat the Kiwi openers failed to make use of the power play, they slumped to a dismal score of 15-3. Shahid Afridi rotated his seamers well and it bought him reward the first three overs yielded three wickets and put Pakistan affirmatively in control.
Guptill was the only batsmen out of the top three to reach double figures. Corey Anderson tried to help his side reach a respectable total but was caught after a miscued shot found the fielder. Tanvir and Irfan both bowled skilfully and restricted New Zealand lower to a score less than 150.
Pakistan had strengthened their batting with the inclusion of Umar Akmal, whom to the delight of the crowd did not disappoint. It was a run chase that Pakistan made look easy by playing good aggressive cricket. Sarfraz Ahmed continued his purple patch of form and Pakistan will hope that this can continue in the upcoming ODI series leading into the 2015 World Cup.
New Zealand will have no time to reflect as the 2nd T20 is to be played on Friday. Pakistan will hope that they can take the positives from this game and play even better in the second T20 to ensure they win the series.
It is to be seen how well New Zealand react and whether or not Pakistan will be able to show such dominance with the bat and bowl in the second T20. It is set to be a fascinating finale to the T20 series.
