We take a look at the 3 biggest fights that can be made in female boxing including Taylor vs Serrano, Claressa Shields and the much-anticipated rematch between Jessica McCaskill and Cecilia Braekhus. These are the 3 biggest fights in female boxing that can be made at the moment and will be the most influential in elevating Female Boxing as well as crowning a definite P4P Queen (Taylor vs Serrano)
Taylor vs Serrano: P4P #1 vs P4P #2
After Katie Taylor repeated her controversial win over Delfine Persoon with another close encounter in the fight camp finale, there is only one worthy opponent left at a 135 pounds. This is the 7-division, 9-time Puerto Rican Power Punching World Champion Amanda Serrano (39-1) who Taylor was initially set to face on May 2.
Serrano is a real test for Taylor and one of the greatest female boxers and martial artists (MMA, Wrestling) in the world. Despite this, she has a lack of quality opposition due to the minimal amount of depth in female boxing and has never faced anyone close to the skill of Taylor before. Taylor has fought the best opposition out there including two fights with Persoon, McCaskill, Linardatou, Gutierrez etc.
A Taylor vs Serrano fight would do a lot for the popularity of female boxing as Taylor consistently headlines cards (one of the few females to do so) and regularly features on PPV Shows. A Taylor vs Serrano contest could make history by being the first female fight to headline at the prestigious Madison Square Garden on DAZN which would be an incredible feat.
Jessica McCaskill vs Cecilia Braekhus 2: The Rematch
Jessica McCaskill pulled off a huge upset on August 15 when she dethroned the ‘first lady’ of boxing 36-0 Cecilia Braekhus in the States. Braekhus reigned 11-years undefeated as a world champion with 6 of them as undisputed. A close fight, Braekhus still awarded McCaskill full credit though and after careful; consideration decided she wanted the opportunity to get her belts back and activated a rematch clause.
Braekhus McCaskill 2 could see Braekhus lose for the second consecutive time and end her glorious career as a result, or it could be the driving factor that brings the Norwegian out of her comfort zone and makes her work harder to strive to be better. The winner here would eye a big fight with the Taylor vs Serrano winner if that fight were to happen.
Braekhus has long-eyed a fight with Taylor and many feel she signed with Matchroom for that purpose. There are a few obstacles in the way though including Serrano upsetting the odds (Taylor vs Serrano), a fired-up McCaskill hungry to keep her belts and weight issues as Braekhus is two weights heavier. Nevertheless, it is another major Female fight between the two biggest advocates for Female Boxing.
Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall: Who is the #1 Middleweight in the World?
Claressa ‘T-Rex’ Shields has reached the pinnacle of the sport and asserted herself as a top-3 P4P Female Boxer in just 10 fights. In that time, she has become a 3-weight world champion including an undisputed championship at 160 pounds and headlining two Showtime Cards. Shields, a double Olympic gold medalist has only suffered one defeat amateur or pro; at the hands of Britain’s Savannah Marshall.
Marshall made a huge statement on the Usyk-Chisora Undercard, stopping Hannah Rankin who extended Shields 10 rounds in 2018 to win the WBO Middleweight World Title. Marshall now holds a belt at the weight where Shields reigned supreme. Team Marshall and her promoters Eddie Hearn all believe Marshall can beat Shields again and are calling for that fight.
Marshall boxes very fluently in a rhythm. She has amazing power, shot selection and punches in devastating combinations. She has the repertoire to not only beat Shields but to stop her. Shields, however, has signed a contract with MMA Company Professional Fighters League (PFL) and is expected to crossover to MMA in 2021, leaving Shields-Marshall in doubts.
