The Chicago Cubs’ Farm System

Ant Rizzo

Cubies

The Chicago Cubs season this year showed some signs of things to come. Everyone thought that this would be a good year for the Cubs (that happens every year) because it was the 100th Anniversary of Wrigley Field. If you are a Cubs fan, you realized that this was not a terrible year for the Cubbies. It all starts with the juveniles.

The young prospects that Rick Renteria and the Cubs Front Office brought up are some of the best in the game. It all starts with Anthony Rizzo. Anthony Rizzo had the best season of his career with a .286 batting average and he was 2nd in the NL with 32 HR. He is not just a hitter though. He had a .993 fielding percentage ranking 8th in the National League. Rizzo has a huge future in front of him.

He has the potential to be the best first basemen in baseball.

Next is the hyped-up Javier Baez. No Cubs fan will forget the debut of Javier Baez. Going 0 for 5 heading into the 12th inning. All Cubs fans waiting for him to show us why he was so hyped. Watching him hit that game-winning HR in the top of the 12th inning at Coors

Field was confirmation that he is hyped-up for a reason. Even though he batted .169, there is no way that he can get any worse. Throughout the minors, he batted at an average of .279. This is just what the cubs want. Power, speed, and hype.

Arismendy Alcantara was probably the least talked about Cubs’ prospect last year. Alcantara can play a variety of positions from 2B to CF. He is a switch-hitter that can lead off for years to come. He definitely has the speed. His fielding is pretty good. He is a CF that the cubs will use and need.

Jorge Soler is one of the best prospects in baseball this year. Fans wish that he came up earlier from the minors. Jorge Soler came into the MLB and showed that he was ready for the show. At Great American Ballpark, Soler hit his first career hit, a HR to left-center field, off of Mat Latos. Latos is a very good pitcher. Soler was ready since day one it seems. His skill set is one of the best in the system. From his power to his speed to his arm. There is nothing that Soler cannot do.

Kyle Hendricks was one of the biggest surprises of the Cubs season. He showed us that he will be in the rotation next year. With the Cubs trying to sign Lester, Scherzer, and/or Shields, rotation spots are limited. Hendricks knew that it was his time to shine. He started 13 games. He went 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA. This is a dream for the Cubs. Seeing a starting pitcher with an ERA under 3.00. He came and answered the Cubs questions and prayers about the rotation.

Kris Bryant is the best prospect in the Cubs system. Even though he did not come up to the majors this year, Cubs fans know for sure that he will be playing in the major leagues next year. It gives the fans something to look forward to. If Bryant is what he is expected to be, then he will be the best 3B in baseball in a couple of years. We are on the edge of our seats waiting for this kid to show us what he’s got.

The Cubs have something about them that is appealing. It will be showing up in the next year or two. Not to forget that they have CJ Edwards, Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell, Dan Vogelbach, etc. in the minors still. When these guys come up to the majors, then the Cubs have the potential to be the team to beat in the MLB. All eyes are on the best farm system in baseball, one of the most loved teams in baseball, the Chicago Cubs.
