Wayne Rooney – Back From The Dead?

After a dull and gloomy 2015, the new year has commenced with flying colors for the England and Manchester United forward, where he has bagged 7 goals in 7 games, his latest coming in a 3-0 victory against Stoke at Old Trafford. This sudden burst of form has brought a surprised delight for the fans, whereas, many of the critics, who were writing the Manchester United number 10 off, have been awestruck.

The past year saw Rooney score a mere 13 goals throughout the 12 months, with a poor ratio of one goal every 300 minutes.

The reasons put forward for this struggle in form were rather diverse, with some feeling that Wayne Rooney’s time as a top class forward was over, while some defended the England captain, claiming that the goal drought was due to the defensive tactics implemented by the Manchester United boss, Louis Van Gaal, for which the Dutchman has come under fire quite a number of times by the fans, media and more recently, Manchester United’s sponsors, Adidas.

Whatever the reason for a lack of goals for Wayne may be, his stats in the first month of 2016 have definitely and explicitly pointed towards a resurgence for the striker, where he has improved his goal ratio to every goal per 90 minutes.

This return of form will prove to be a massive source of relief for Van Gaal, who, as stated previously, has been denounced for the lack of goals and attacking football from his side. The decorated coach would definitely be hoping that Rooney continues his good run of form, as it would prove to be a crucial factor in determining Louis Van Gaal’s future at Manchester United, as well as in keeping the club’s top 4 aspirations alive.
