Despite a bruising 4-1 Ashes defeat to Australia this winter, along with murmurings of friction between the coach and the captain, the ECB have put their faith in Brendon McCullum and are confident he is still the right man to take England forward.
How the ECB Reached This Decision
Richard Gould, the ECB CEO, has put his faith in the New Zealander, keen to give him every chance to prove himself and saying that parting ways with McCullum would have been “the easy thing to do.”
Talking about his father, Bobby, and Bobby’s experience in football, Gould said that sacking was part of the job and wasn’t necessarily the right thing. Moving people on can sometimes be the easy thing to do. That’s not the route that we’re going to take.”
McCullum has led the England team in a home and away Ashes series now, and as things stand, will be doing so again, on home soil in 2027.
Power Struggle Between McCullum and Stokes?
Ben Stokes and McCullum seemed to be singing off the same hymn sheet back in 2023; the skipper made the aggressive decision to declare with England 393-8 in the first innings of their opening Test against Australia at Edgbaston to give his side “a chance to pounce” at the Australian batters in the evening session.
Ultimately, this bold and aggressive move backfired; Stokes’ opposite number, Pat Cummins, showed mental fortitude and brilliance with the bat to get his team over the line. Had that decision not been made, the series’ trajectory could have looked very different.
During the recent away series, Stokes said, “We are now playing against teams that have answers to the style of cricket we have been playing over quite a long period of time.”
Ultimately, ‘Bazball’ was never a method of playing Test cricket that cracked India or Australia; under McCullum and Stokes’ stewardship, England haven’t won a series against either.
However, Stokes’ comment suggested that the tactical perspectives of him and the coach didn’t align. Rob Keys has brushed this off, saying that there was no“ bust-up” between them.
Change in Mindset to County Cricket
Keys explained England hadn’t considered county player merit enough when making selections, something he says they are now going to look into more.
The prime example of county pedigree being overlooked was Shoaib Bashir, who was called up after taking ten wickets in first-class cricket; the spinner showed his capability on the international stage, but considering that Kevin Pietersen quit the IPL to re-join Surrey in 2015 in a bid to gain an England recall, only for it to fail, shows that for a while first-class cricket hasn’t been used as the yardstick it perhaps should have.
This change in approach could open up doors for talent to get their chance on the international stage.
Looking Ahead
Ultimately, success for England means beating Australia in 2027; the Ashes is always difficult, but Australia haven’t won a series in England since 2001. The last two series have ended in draws, and McCullum really needs to stamp his authority on the series next year to show that his backing from the ECB was warranted.
Every decision up to that point will be scrutinised, and only time will tell whether McCullum is the right person to take this group forward.
