Manchester United had to work hard in the blistering Liverpool rain, as they eked out a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Everton in a tense Premier League encounter. The intense battle between the two clubs highlighted a managerial master class from Manchester United interim tactician Michael Carrick, whose defensive discipline and moments of attacking brilliance had the travelling fans lingering at Hill Dickenson Stadium to celebrate the victory.

The Red Devils outfoxed the wily, pragmatic David Moyes of Everton, whose fragile defence cracked under pressure, and his toothless attack failed to trouble Senne Lammen in goal for United. Manchester United showed resilience and structure, grinding out a result that could prove crucial in their season.

Manchester United Player Ratings Formation (4-3-2-1)

Senne Lemmen – 9/10
Lemmen stood strong between the sticks, especially in the later stages of the game. He pulled off a sublime save in the 83rd minute to stop Micheal Keans Pile driver.  His positioning and composure ensured a clean sheet.

Diogo Dalot – 7/10
The Portuguese could not put a foot wrong. He was energetic and dependable. His experience and ability enabled him to handle defensive balance duties while providing attacking support.

Harry Maguire – 8/10
He was rock-solid at the heart of the defence, demonstrating why Manchester United pulled him away from Leicester City a few seasons ago. He dominated aerially and made key interceptions throughout to keep Thierno Barry at bay.

Leny Yaro – 7/10
Aggressive and composed in possession. A strong partner at the back.

Luke Shaw – 6.5/10
Shaw has been a consistent member of the Red Devils’ defence, starting every single game for Manchester United since the start of the new 2026/27 campaign.

Casemiro – 7/10
Disciplined and effective in breaking up Everton’s play and restarting Manchester United’s attack.

Bruno Fernandes – 6.5/10
Creative spark. His vision and passing were not as precise as in the prior games. Idrissa Gana Gueye kept him relatively quiet.

Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10
Under Carrick’s tutelage, Mainoo has rediscovered his form and remains cool and composed, while maintaining control in midfield under pressure.

Matheus Cunha – 6.5/10
Lacked that cutting edge in the final third, but was very instrumental in the passage of play leading to the goal.

Amad – 7.5/10
Direct and dangerous. A constant threat that influenced the moment of victory.

Bryan Mbeumo – 6.5/10
Worked hard and was a thorn in Everton’s defence. He should have gotten his name on the score before being a provider for Benjamin Sesko’s goal.

Manchester United Substitute Rating:

Benjamin Sesko – 8/10

Super sub “Big Ben” scored his 7th goal of the season, handing Manchester United all three points to firmly secure fourth place for another weekend.  Adding another late goal to his tally has the fans widely considering him a big game-changer.

Noussair Mazraoui — 7/10

Came on to help see out the game

Ayden Heaven — N/A

Late stoppage-time appearance, too little time to be rated

Everton Player Ratings Formation (4-2-3-1)

Everton was competitive but ultimately fell short due to a lack of attacking precision.

Jordan Pickford – 8/10
His heroics kept Everton in the match. However, he was caught off guard by an electrifying counterattack that led to the goal.

James Tarkowski – 7.5/10
Very effective throughout, but was very lucky to remain on the pitch after a few naughty challenges.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 6/10
Amad exposed his defensive fragility.

Michael Keane – 7/10
Struggled at times against pacey attackers. But proved threatening in the air from set pieces.

James Garner – 7/10
Created the most chances in the match

Idrissa Gana Gueye – 7/10
Physically dominant and effective in midfield battles.

Tim Iroegbunam – 6/10
Energetic but inconsistent.

LLiman Ndiaye – 6/10
Ndiaye completed the most dribbles in the match and forced Manchester to defend a lot in the second half.

 Harrison Armstrong – 6/10
Failed to deliver quality in key moments.

Keirman Dewsbury-Hall – 6/10
Put in a very good shift and came close to scoring.

Theirno Barry – 5/10

Was very poor in transition; he had the least number of touches of any outfield player despite playing 90 minutes.

Everton Substitute Ratings

Tyrique George — 6/10

Brought on to add attacking energy.

Beto — 6/10

Added some movement in attack, limited product despite decent positioning

Tactical Analysis

A match that was determined by fine margins. Manchester United’s improved defensive organisation proved crucial, despite a late change that brought in Yaro to replace the injured Lisandro Martínez, who formed a solid partnership.

Everton’s structure was impressive, but their inability to convert chances ultimately cost them. The midfield battle was evenly contested, but Mbeumo’s creativity and pace gave United the edge.

United’s attacking threat largely came from wide areas, particularly through Dalot and Amad, whose direct approach unsettled Everton’s defence throughout the match.

Manchester United is at home struggling against Crystal Palace, while Everton travels to Newcastle.

  • Great read! This article definitely provides vivid detail for anyone who may have missed the game or key plays while grabbing popcorn! You really captured the strengths of the players performances.

  • “Really enjoyed this! I liked how clearly you broke down the standout performers.”

  • That’s a fair point—Maguire did have a strong game, but Shaw and Dalot were just as influential, especially with their involvement in the build-up and overall attacking flow. It’s reasonable to highlight that their contributions go beyond just defensive duties. Overall, it’s good to recognize all three had solid outings without needing to diminish any of them. Thanks Chris!

  • Maguire certainly had a good game yesterday… so did Shaw and Dalot – plus they both contributed more to the build up of play. So I am not questioning you numbers for him. But, they earn same if not more

  • These bite size articles work perfect for me and allow me to be in the know.

They also allow me to have more information than most people in the room when the arguments start.
