The IPL offered ₹20 crore to its 2026 champions, while SA20 awarded R32.5 million from a R70 million team prize fund. The PSL paid US$500,000 to its winning franchise and a separate US$500,000 prize to its players.
A current BBL championship payment was not publicly confirmed in the reviewed Cricket Australia material; its often-cited A$450,000 figure dates to 2015-16. The comparison distinguishes prize money from salaries, auction spending, sponsorship and other commercial income.
The IPL, PSL, Big Bash League and SA20 all offer prize money for success, but their payment structures are not directly comparable.
For the latest completed seasons, IPL 2026 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru received ₹20 crore, while runners-up Gujarat Titans received ₹12.5 crore. SA20 Season 4 offered R32.5 million to its champions from a R70 million team prize fund.
The PSL used a different model in 2026. Its title-winning franchise received US$500,000, while a separate US$500,000 tournament-winning prize was allocated to the players.
The BBL is the difficult part of the comparison. Cricket Australia have confirmed Perth Scorchers as BBL|15 champions, but its recent public competition material does not specify a current championship prize payment. The latest clearly documented Cricket Australia prize-money structure located for this comparison dates to BBL|05 in 2015-16. It should not automatically be treated as the BBL|15 payout.
That distinction matters. Prize money is only one part of the finances behind franchise T20 cricket. Player salaries, auction spending, sponsorship, broadcasting revenue and commercial distributions are separate.
For readers new to the short format, World in Sport’s cricket rules guide explains how T20 cricket works, while our IPL format explainer covers the league and playoff system in more detail.

IPL vs PSL vs BBL vs SA20 prize money at a glance
| Competition | Season | Champion payment | Runner-up payment | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPL | 2026 | ₹20 crore | ₹12.5 crore | Third and fourth also received finishing-position payments |
| PSL | 2026 | US$500,000 to winning franchise, plus separate US$500,000 players’ prize | US$300,000 to runner-up franchise | Franchise and player rewards were separated |
| BBL | 2025-26 | Current payment not publicly confirmed in the Cricket Australia material checked | Current payment not publicly confirmed | Older CA structure is useful historically but should not be presented as current |
| SA20 | 2025-26 | R32.5 million | R16.25 million | R70 million team prize fund |
The table deliberately avoids converting the figures into pounds or a common currency. Exchange rates change, and using an unofficial conversion could make an evergreen comparison misleading.
SA20 itself described its R32.5 million championship prize before the Season 4 final as the second-highest franchise winner’s purse behind the IPL.
How much prize money does the IPL winner receive?
Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the 2026 IPL and received ₹20 crore in prize money.
Gujarat Titans collected ₹12.5 crore as runners-up. Rajasthan Royals received ₹7 crore after finishing third, while Sunrisers Hyderabad received ₹6.5 crore for fourth place.
The key point is that the ₹20 crore figure is the championship payment to the successful franchise. It should not be confused with the money IPL teams spend building their playing squads.
An IPL player’s contract is a separate financial arrangement. So are sponsorship deals, central commercial distributions and other franchise income.
Winning the IPL therefore does not mean each member of the playing squad receives a simple share of ₹20 crore. The published team prize and individual player earnings are different parts of the competition’s finances.
That distinction is especially important with the IPL because player auction figures can themselves run into several crore. A large player contract is not prize money.

Has IPL prize money increased?
The IPL’s championship payout has remained surprisingly stable when compared with the rapid commercial growth around the competition.
The official IPL website stated that the 2019 champions would receive INR 20 crore and the runners-up INR 12.5 crore. Those are the same winner and runner-up amounts reported for IPL 2026.
That does not mean the IPL’s overall finances have stood still.
Prize money should not be used as a substitute for league revenue, franchise valuations, broadcasting income or player salaries. The championship cheque represents one specific reward for sporting performance.
How does PSL prize money work?
The Pakistan Super League introduced an important change for HBL PSL 11 in 2026.
The winning franchise received US$500,000, and the runners-up franchise received US$300,000.
There was then a separate US$500,000 tournament-winning prize for the players. The franchise judged to have produced the best player-development efforts was also allocated US$200,000.
The Pakistan Cricket Board’s PSL 11 announcement explicitly separated these payments.
That makes the PSL structure different from simply saying its champion received US$500,000.
The winning franchise was awarded US$500,000, but the title also triggered another US$500,000 prize specifically for the winning players. Those are separate categories and should remain separate when comparing the PSL with rival competitions.
Peshawar Zalmi went on to win PSL 11, beating Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final on 3 May 2026.
How PSL prize money changed in 2026
The 2026 structure also represented a change from PSL X in 2025.
For the 2025 tournament, the PCB announced US$500,000 for the champions and US$200,000 for the runners-up. Lahore Qalandars ultimately collected the winner’s prize after beating Quetta Gladiators.
For PSL 11, the winning franchise payment remained US$500,000, but the runner-up payment rose to US$300,000.
More importantly, the competition introduced the separate US$500,000 winning players’ reward and the US$200,000 player-development franchise award.
That makes direct historical comparisons more complicated. Looking only at the champion franchise payment would miss an important part of the 2026 structure.
What is the BBL prize money?
The Big Bash League requires more caution.
Cricket Australia confirmed Perth Scorchers as BBL|15 champions after their victory over Sydney Sixers in January 2026. However, the recent official material reviewed for this article does not state a refreshed BBL|15 champion or runner-up prize payment.
An older Cricket Australia announcement is often quoted when discussing BBL prize money.
Ahead of BBL|05 in 2015, Cricket Australia increased the competition’s prize allocation to A$890,000. Under that structure, the champions received A$450,000, the runners-up A$260,000. The losing semi-finalists A$80,000 each and the fifth-placed team A$20,000.
| BBL position | BBL|05 announced payment |
|---|---|
| Champions | A$450,000 |
| Runners-up | A$260,000 |
| Losing semi-finalists | A$80,000 each |
| Fifth place | A$20,000 |
These figures remain useful historical context. But they should not be labelled as confirmed BBL|15 or BBL|16 prize money unless Cricket Australia publishes or confirms that the same structure still applies.
That is particularly important because the competition format and player-payment system have changed substantially since 2015.
Did BBL players receive the old prize-money increase?
Cricket Australia’s 2015 announcement also made an important distinction between clubs and players.
The additional A$600,000 went to successful clubs rather than being added directly to the player prize pool. Cricket Australia said players would continue to share the existing prize money, while also benefiting through its wider revenue-sharing arrangement.
Again, that describes the arrangement announced for BBL|05. It should not be assumed to describe current player distributions without newer confirmation.
It does show why team prize money and player earnings must be kept separate.

How much does the SA20 winner receive?
SA20 offered one of the clearest prize structures among the four leagues in its 2025-26 season.
The Season 4 champions received R32.5 million.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the title and received R32.5 million, while runners-up Pretoria Capitals collected R16.25 million. The competition’s team prize pool was R70 million.
The official SA20 final preview described the R32.5 million championship payment as the second-highest franchise purse behind the IPL.
That is a useful comparison because it comes directly from the competition rather than relying on a temporary currency conversion.
SA20 also gives separate individual awards across the season. Those should not be confused with the main team prize fund.
Is the total prize fund the same as the winner’s prize?
No.
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when comparing cricket prize money.
The total prize fund covers all payments within the defined prize structure. The winner’s prize is only the amount allocated to the champion.
SA20 illustrates the difference clearly. Its Season 4 team prize fund was R70 million, but the champion’s share was R32.5 million.
The IPL publishes different payments according to finishing position. Its winner received ₹20 crore in 2026, but that figure alone does not represent every finishing-position award handed out during the playoffs.
The PSL adds another complication because it separated franchise prizes and a players’ championship prize in 2026.
That is why a headline figure needs context.
Prize money is not the same as player salary
Franchise T20 cricket involves several different types of payment.
Prize money rewards results in the competition. Player salaries pay cricketers for representing their franchise. Those contracts exist regardless of whether the team wins the tournament.
Commercial earnings are different again.
A franchise can generate money through sponsorship, broadcasting distributions, ticketing, merchandise and other commercial agreements. Those revenues do not become part of the official championship prize simply because the team wins.
Performance bonuses can also exist separately where contracts or competition rules provide for them.
For a reliable comparison, each figure needs to stay in its correct category.
Which T20 league has the biggest winner’s prize?
The IPL remains the benchmark among these four competitions.
Its 2026 champions received ₹20 crore.
SA20 officially described its R32.5 million Season 4 winner’s payment as the second-highest franchise purse behind the IPL.
The PSL cannot be judged by its US$500,000 franchise payment alone because PSL 11 also carried a separate US$500,000 championship prize for the winning players.
For the BBL, a definitive current comparison is not possible without a newly confirmed Cricket Australia prize figure.
That is more accurate than taking the A$450,000 championship figure announced in 2015 and assuming it still applies unchanged.
Why direct currency comparisons can be misleading
Turning every payment into pounds or US dollars may look convenient, but it reduces the value of an evergreen guide.
Exchange rates move.
A comparison written at one point in the year could therefore give a different ranking or gap when currencies change later.
The safer method is to preserve official currencies and compare the structure behind each payment.
That means ₹20 crore for the IPL. The separately defined US dollar payments in the PSL, South African rand for SA20 and Australian dollars where an official BBL figure is available.
Readers can then see what each competition actually announced without an unofficial conversion becoming mistaken for part of the prize-money rules.
What matters most when comparing T20 prize money?
There are four questions to ask.
First, what does the champion franchise receive?
Second, what do the runners-up and other finishing teams receive?
Third, are there separate player or individual awards?
Finally, is the published figure actually prize money, or is it a salary budget, auction purse or commercial payment?
Apply those questions and the differences become much clearer.
The IPL pays a substantial championship award alongside other playoff finishing payments.
The PSL now separates some franchise and player rewards.
SA20 publishes a substantial team prize pool with a defined champion’s share.
The BBL has a well-documented historical prize structure, but a current figure should not be claimed until newer official confirmation is available.
That is the most useful way to compare IPL, PSL, BBL and SA20 prize money without mixing figures that serve very different purposes.
