The former Sporting CP Manager, Ruben Amorim, has just been announced as Erik Ten Hag’s successor at Manchester United.

Amorim, who joined the Leões in March 2020, won two Liga Portugal Titles, the first of which was the club’s first since 2002.

He also won the Taca de Portugal(Portuguese FA Cup) in  2021 and 2022, along with Braga in 2020.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in May 2013, five Managers have tried to sustain the mentality of winning trophies for the club.

Apart from two FA Cups, two League Cups, and the Europa League in 2016/17, United was only in one Title race with Mourinho in 2017-18.

For a club of this magnitude, this is not good enough.

As the new Red Devils Boss, Amorim faces a huge task to get the Red Devils back to what they were: a trophy-winning machine.

Back in the days under Sir Alex, United were a free-flowing, aggressive team that most opponents feared facing.

But despite the Mourinhos Van Gaals and Tan Hags being in the dugout, teams weren’t as fearful of them as the Scotsman.

Amorim’s biggest challenge will be to get the team back to competing for trophies while imprinting his philosophy on the players.

Player Power

According to United fans, player power is why managers have only had two-year stints at the club after the Ferguson era.

Let’s not forget that there are still first team squad players at the club that have let down Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and now Erik ten Hag. These players have not played to their full potential and they haven’t shown the commitment that our great club deserves.

Regardless of the manager, there is clear player power in the Manchester United dressing room. However, there is a significant lack of actual leadership and responsibility from any one individual on the pitch. Some players, such as Marcus Rashford, need to go.

But if that’s the case, surely Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Dave Brailsford, and Dan Ashworth need to look at their recruitment strategy and build a squad of players, who want to win regardless of who the manager is.

It’s no good just appointing a Manager who does well for a year or two and then fails in their third year.

This sets an example of weak mentality at the club.

How Amorim deals with this issue, will be fascinating to see.

As things stand, United are 14th with just 11 points from nine games, and are seven points off the top four, which is where they should be.

Home Form

Old Trafford used to be a fortress for the Red Devils. At one time, most visiting teams found the atmosphere intimidating.

But now teams can think that if they play to their potential, they will stand a chance of getting a result in their favor.

If you want to be a force in the Premier League, you need to make your home ground a fortress.

At the moment, Old Trafford is anything but that.

United have played four home games so far this season and have scored just six points out of a possible 12.

So Amorim must fix this immediately: make Old Trafford a tough place to come.

Style Of Play

Amorim prefers a 3-4-3 system, which switches to a 3-2-5 in possession. Like Pep Guardiola, he emphasizes dominating possession of the ball.

This would ideally suit Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes, who can play intricate passes through the opposition’s midfield.

But the biggest thing is how they cope out of possession, which Ten Hag struggled with during his tenure at Old Trafford.

United’s Midfield is so open that teams are finding it too easy to play through

It will be intriguing to see how soon Amorim solves this issue and makes United hard to beat while deploying his system.

So, with Amorim entering the dugout at Old Trafford, is he the man to redefine Manchester United?
