Tactical Comparisons with Current Top Managers

The new Brighton manager, Fabian Hurzeler, has shown flashes of brilliant managers of the present, with the control of possession and baiting the press that is comparable with Roberto De Zerbi, the use of wingers and full-backs reminiscent of Julian Nagelsmann and the high press that has hints of Jurgen Klopp.

Fabian Hurzeler is the manager to replace Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, as announced by
Brighton & Hove Albion FC on the 15th June. He has been St. Pauli’s head coach from
December 2022, guiding them to 5th place and then promotion last season, winning the 2.
Bundesliga.

Fabian Hurzeler: Preferred Formation and Tactical Setup

The American Born coach seemingly supports the use of a three at the back, whereas the current Albion players Dunk, Van Hecke, Igor and even Webster will fit right in, fitting the mould of St Pauli’s typical starters are Karol Mets, Eric Smith and Kauke Wahl. Despite often fielding a 3-4-3 formation, his team was known for transitioning to a 5-2-3 or 5-4-1 when out of possession to reduce the opportunities the opposition had.

Center-Backs’ Roles

Whilst off the ball, centre-backs will always have the primary focus to defend; on the ball, the
centre-back in the middle of the three will step forward into more of a defensive midfield role, becoming a pivot and aiding with the progression of the ball.

I believe Van Hecke can fulfil this role superbly. He can carry the ball and progress it wonderfully and has excellent passing ability. Another option for this role could be Adam Webster. Having faced scrutiny, he came out on top by the end of the season, having some perfect games, and he could have it in him to float into midfield, too.

Wingbacks’ Responsibilities

Meanwhile, wingbacks will hold the width, push forward to attack, and step into midfield, allowing midfielders to move higher up the pitch during the buildup and more numbers in midfield. Another option is for wingers to invert into attacking midfield and allow the wingbacks to attack the wings on the ball.

They also go back to form a 5 in defence, too.

Tariq Lamptey would love this role, with his energy to attack and cross the ball high up the
pitch. Unfortunately, injuries may be his downfall. Another person who could shine in this role is Valentin Barco.

The new signing can play both high up the pitch and at left back, making him the perfect man for this role. It would be an exciting opportunity for the 19-year-old, who was only brought in in January.

Finally, Solly March may also excel in this position, surprisingly enough. With this position more of a left midfield/wing role at times, Solly March can play here. His defensive contribution is decent, too, having played full-back in periods of his career.

Left-Back Competition

Whether Estupinan could knock Barco off such a familiar position for the youngster is unknown. He has seen a poor period since his injury, but every Brighton fan will tell you he’s one of the best left-backs in the league.
