When Gareth Southgate named his England squad on the 21st May, he named an extra seven players, taking the total to 33. However, this is just a provisional squad, and in the next few days, Southgate will tell players if they are staying at home or jetting off to Germany. The seven candidates likely to be left out of the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 team are in this post.

James Trafford

With Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale being the stand-out two in between the sticks, James Trafford and Dean Henderson must battle it out for the third-choice spot. In this case, I think Henderson will be the third choice selection ahead of Trafford solely due to Trafford getting relegation with Burnley. However, it shouldn’t be doubted that Trafford will indeed be a future England goalkeeper, just not for this tournament.

Jarell Quansah

After breaking through at Liverpool this season, Quansah was selected in the provisional England squad. But after not playing at St James’ Park on Monday, the Warrington-born centre-back will likely be left out of this year’s squad. Quansah will still have a future with England and will look to become a mainstay for many years.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Another young centre back who plays in Merseyside is set to miss out, this time Jarrad Branthwaite. Despite having a superb season at Goodison Park, Branthwaite is likely to stay home this summer. However, like Quansah, Branthwaite has the potential to become a regular in these England squads in the future.

Curtis Jones

Called up for the first time, Curtis Jones is currently uncapped and expects to remain that way for the time being. Especially after the emergence of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Jones has slipped further down the pecking order for a place on the England side. With that in mind, it is expected Jones will not be heading for Germany, which can be seen as harsh due to his consistent stand-out performances in the lower-age England ranks.

James Maddison

With the emergence of Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze this season, Spurs’ James Maddison’s hopes of being selected for Euro 2024 are not looking good. Maddison is a sole number 10, making him look less favourably than Palmer and Eze. This is due to both players having the versatility to play on the wings. This would then leave James Maddison in a place where he is no longer in Southgate’s plans.

Jarrod Bowen

Arguably, the harshest omission from this squad will be West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen. This even comes after he performed well against Bosnia. The harsh truth is that England has an abundance of attacking talent. Whilst Bowen may offer more going forward than someone like Grealish, he doesn’t have that versatility.

Ivan Toney

After being an unused substitute on Monday, Toney is highly doubtful about being selected for the Euros. Toney’s current role is third-choice striker behind Kane and Watkins. This puts Toney on the chopping block ahead of the Euros. With other attackers hitting form, it won’t be surprising to see Toney leaving the England squad.
