Spain vs France: La Roja Dominate in Inaugural Nations League

Spain claimed the Women's Nations League title as they beat France 2-0 in the final, with goals from Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey.

The World Cup champions claimed their second title in six months after beating France in the first-ever Women’s Nations League final. Securing their place in this summer’s Olympics, with a comfortable victory in Seville.

Spain claimed the Women’s Nations League title as they beat France 2-0 in the final. Goals from Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey in front of a record-breaking crowd of 32,657 at Estadio La Cartuja.

After topping their Nations League Group, A, ahead of Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland. Spain booked their Olympic space after beating the Netherlands 3-0 in the semi-finals on Friday. Whereas this summer’s hosts -France- held off 2016 gold medallists Germany in a 2-1 victory, advancing them to tonight’s final.

The first half saw, Salma Paralluelo’s shot denied by Griedge Mbock Bathy early on. Before, Real Madrid’s Olga Carmona responded from a one-two with Jenni Hermoso on the edge of the penalty box, to whip a cross into an unmarked Bonmati. The Ballon d’Or winner breaking the deadlock with a close-range shot in the 32nd minute.

The hosts dominated possession during the first half, limiting France’s involvement and putting the attacking pressure on the visitors. With Herve Renard’s France side rarely threatening and struggling to get into the game.

Despite a promising spell for France to begin the second half, it didn’t take long for the World champions’ lead to be doubled.

Athenea del Castillo’s pass picked out Mariona in the box and she fired her first-time finish into the goal, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of stopping it.

Spain comfortably saw the game out claiming the title and sending them to their first Olympics in an attempt to claim their third international title.
