In a surprising turn of events, Virat Kohli has opted to sit out of India’s first two Tests against England, citing ‘personal reasons’. The news broke on Monday, leaving Indian fans stunned and speculating on who might fill the shoes of India’s fourth-highest run scorer.
Virat Kohli, who reached Hyderabad on Sunday, missed the team’s optional training session on Monday, raising concerns about his availability for the opening match of the five-Test series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement, quoting Kohli’s emphasis on personal situations demanding his undivided attention. The skipper had previously missed the first T20I against Afghanistan for similar reasons but returned for the subsequent matches.

Cheteshwar Pujara appears the most obvious replacement, having last represented India in the World Test Championship final and since showcasing exceptional form in the Ranji Trophy this year with a double century.

Jay Shah, the honorary secretary of the BCCI, stated, “The BCCI respects his decision and the board and team management have extended its support to the star batter.” Shah followed up his statement by calling upon fans to respect Kohli’s privacy and, instead, focus on supporting the Indian cricket team.
India finds themselves second in the World Test Championship points table and will need to find a way to fill the void left by their talismanic captain before the series kicks off in Hyderabad on January 25.
