A Month Without Basketball…and Sports

It has been over a month since all sports leagues suspended their operations because of the coronavirus pandemic. Since that time, players and owners have pitched into help those that are struggling through this arduous time, by giving some of their salary to employees who work at the arenas. Now that we are in April, we would’ve been in full swing for not just the NBA and NHL playoffs, but also opening day for MLB, soccer leagues across Europe such as the Premier League and La Liga would be nearing the end of their seasons, plus the Champions League, and preparing for EURO 2020, an all  European soccer tournament held by FIFA and the governing body for European soccer,UEFA, while the MLS season continued.

All is not a lost however, as the NFL Draft, which was supposed to be held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, will now be a virtual draft for the first time. Players such as Joe Barrow, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and Tua Tagovailoa will be selected by teams electronically, something unique for the NFL. Meanwhile in Ukraine, soccer games are still being held, though the crowds range from minimal to none, due to social distancing, and wrestling promotions such as WWE and All Elite Wrestling continue to air their shows without any crowds, despite possible contact with COVID-19. Other sporting events such as Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Olympics also feel the sting of having their events cancelled, but because those events are held in the summer, it’s uncertain whether or not they will be held.

While some still remain at home and others wearing masks and gloves on their hands while going outside, sports channels and other stations are providing marathons and throwback games for all to enjoy, most notably, Nickelodeon, a kid’s channel, aired a Super Bowl game, to get kids to know and learn the game of American football. During these uncertain times, we must band together as one, for we are all on the same team.
