Will Barcelona Let Their Main Striker Depart?

Barcelona could entertain offers for their main striker, Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires by the end of the season.

The 37-year-old has had an incredible impact at Barcelona since joining, scoring 105 goals in over 156 appearances for the club. Despite being entangled with injuries and fitness problems, Lewandowski is slowly making his mark, having scored four goals in seven top-flight matches. The Polish international’s goal-scoring capability could be a deciding factor in their bid to defend the La Liga title.

His high wages complicate the situation, as Barcelona management would have to think twice before offering a contract extension, given the tight financial regulations they must comply with.

Another factor that influences a contract decision is his age; he isn’t getting any younger, and Barcelona is looking to build a young team that can continue to perform season after season.

Ferran Torres can deliver upfront, but a player like Lewandowski can make a bigger difference given his goal-scoring prowess.

The management will actively explore offers coming in the January transfer window, as they wouldn’t want to lose the striker for free when his contract expires.

For the January transfer window, Saudi clubs are willing to pounce on him, offering €35m (£30.8m) for the striker, who joined the Spanish club from Bayern Munich in 2022.

Barcelona could jeopardise their pursuit of lifting silverware towards the end of the season by letting go of their star striker; however, from a financial perspective, they wouldn’t want to lose him for free, nor would they want to shell out a huge amount for a contract extension.

The Spanish giants are at the crossroads here, and a decision could make or break their season.
