There had been a lot of hype and discussion regarding Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United before this season, but Van Gaal was off to a terrible start, as they were beaten at home by Swansea with 1 – 2.
It was the season-opener for the 2014/15 season in the Premier League, Manchester United were visited by Swansea FC.
Manchester United had plenty of injuries for their first match of the season with players like Robin Van Persie, Danny Welbeck, Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans not available. This meant that players like Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingaard were given the opportunity to impress the new manager.
The first minutes under the guidance of Van Gaal were far from the expected excitement for the United-fans. Apart from a deflected Phil Jones cross, which were semi-dangerous, the home team had nothing to offer and show in the offensive department.
Swansea, on the other hand, got the 1 – 0 lead when Ki Sung-Yong scored in the 28th minute. Ki saw himself with a clear shot at the edge of the box, and scored past De Gea, which sent shockwaves through Old Trafford.
It did however look like a comeback was on the table for United, when captain Wayne Rooney scored in the 53rd minute with an acrobatic shot, after a cornerkick from Juan Mata.
Wayne Rooney had another great effort in the 66th minute, where he executed a beautifully hit free-kick, which were close to entering the top right corner.
Despite this, it was Swansea who took the lead again in the 72nd minute. Gylfi Sigurdsson were the goalscorer to 1 – 2. The Icelandic received the ball after a terrible attempt at goal from Routledge, which luckily bounced to the feet of Sigurdsson, who scored past De Gea.
United were unable to strike back, and the match ended 1 -2. A beautiful triumph for Swansea and Gary Monk and a disastrous start for Manchester United and Van Gaal.
