The Best Central BACKS In World Football As Of Today

The role of a centre-back keeps evolving as the game continues to evolve. What you see in your modern-day centre isn’t particularly the same as your traditional centre-back.

The traditional centre-back is built solely on physical dominance, raw defensive instincts, and aerial prowess, whereas the modern-day centre-back’s strengths include ball progression, starting attacks, immense tactical intelligence, and technical skills.

With all this being said, here is a list of my top five central defenders in world football as of when this article is being published.

Pau Cubarsi

Pau Cubarsi has been crucial for Barcelona in all competitions this season. Initially, I was debating between the La Masia wonderkid and Nicholas Schlotterbeck, who has been integral to their title challenge this season. But Cubarsi slightly edges out a little bit, especially if you compare their stats in the Champions League.

Pau Cubarsi currently leads his team in passing stats, according to Opta, with the most passes and the most successful passes from open play. He is also second in his team in total carries, distance carries and progressive carries (Opta) in a team with Pedri, De Jong and Eric Garcia.

Pau Cubarsi is the youngest player to start in the Champions League quarter-finals, breaking the record set by CSKA Moscow’s Georgi Shchennikov. The Spanish wonderkid was also named man of the match in his UCL debut in a 3-1 win against Napoli.

At age 18, Cubarsi has won a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups and a Summer Olympic gold medal with Spain in 2024.

Marc Guehi

Marc Guéhi joined Manchester City in January for a bargain of around £20M from South London club Crystal Palace. Ever since joining, the former Crystal Palace skipper has fit into the team like a puzzle.

The English international is third in all carries for Manchester City and fourth in total progressive carries, with 235, for the English giants, according to Opta.

In Opta defensive stats, the Manchester City man is third in tackles, leads the team in interceptions, is third in possession won, and second in aerial duels won.

According to Footystats, Marc Guéhi is ranked in the 86th percentile for shots blocked, clearances, aerial duels and interceptions in the league and the 87th percentile for clean sheets in the league this season.

Marc Guéhi is known for his aerial dominance, physicality, and, most impressively, his leadership.

William Saliba

William Saliba is an integral part of Arsenal’s title charge and their quadruple charge this season.

The French international leads his team in successful passes with 1,519 and a success rate of 92%, according to Opta, and has the third highest number of successful passes in the final third and is in the 92nd percentile for successful passes. For the defensive stats, he is second in the % of ground duels won with 59% and has won the second most aerial duels in his team.

According to Footystats, the central defender has played 37 games, scored 1 goal, conceded 18 goals and kept 19 clean sheets for both club and country. That makes 11 clean sheets in 24 games in the league and 3 goals conceded in 5 games in the Champions League.

He is in the 99th percentile for goals conceded per 90 (0.54) and in the 96th percentile for clean sheets (11/24 games in the Premier League).

William Saliba is known for his ball-carrying, dominance in ground duels, and ball progression, as Opta numbers have shown.

Alessandro Bastoni

Alessandro Bastoni is a major reason why Inter Milan is currently Serie A leaders and is crucial in how the Inter wing-back system works, as he’s able to step up against opposition players and cover Dimarco’s defensive lapses.

The ex-Atalanta player is in the 93rd percentile for clean sheets and 82nd percentile for goals conceded. His strengths this season are really in his offensive stats, as Inter Milan has been a lethal offensive force.

Bastoni is in the 85th percentile for assists provided, with 4 to his name as a CB; 91st percentile for expected assists; 99th percentile for passes; 98th percentile for successful passes; and 85th percentile for successful crosses this season, according to Footystats.

As per Opta, Bastoni leads his team in all carries (329), including progressive carries (210). Bastoni leads his team in tackles, is second in interceptions, third in ground duels and second in aerial duels.

Bastoni is known for his excellent vision, football IQ, and offensive contributions from wider areas.

Gabriel Magalhães

At the top of my list is Gabriel Magalhães, who is a major reason Arsenal will win the Premier League this season.

Here, the narrative shifts from a ball-playing defender to a central defender. Gabriel dominates the league in more defensive numbers than ball-playing numbers compared to the other four, and he can still operate as a ball-playing defender and give you an exceptional performance.

Gabriel is in the 90th percentile for successful passes, the 88th percentile for pass completion rate and the 85th percentile for cross-completion rate.

Then you take a look at the defensive stats. Gabriel is in the 98th percentile for goals conceded, 99th percentile for clean sheets, and 92nd percentile for aerial duels won; he’s been dribbled past just four times in 24 games, is in the 97th percentile for shots blocked, and is in the 88th percentile for shot conversion rate.

Gabriel Magalhães is known for his strong charisma, aerial dominance, physically dominant play, and elite tackling.
