When Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Rúben Neves from Porto in 2017, few could have predicted just how iconic the Portuguese midfielder would become, dubbed “The King” in Wolverhampton.
Arriving as a 20-year-old with Champions League experience, Neves helped fire Wolves back to the Premier League, becoming a symbol of the club’s modern era. But beyond his leadership and tactical intelligence, Neves earned cult status at Molineux with his outrageous catalogue of goals, often from long range and always dripping with class.
Wolves’ Long Range Legend
5. Wolves Vs Everton (11/08/2018, Premier League)
Neves made his Premier League debut with a bang. Against Everton, he curled a majestic free-kick over the wall and into the top corner, Wolves’ first top-flight goal after a six-year absence. He later assisted Raúl Jimènez’s equaliser in a 2-2 draw, announcing himself as a Premier League midfielder in style. It was a moment that said Wolves were back.
4. Wolves Vs Aston Villa (16/10/2021, Premier League)
With Wolves trailing 2-0 to Aston Villa and just ten minutes remaining, a stunning comeback began, and Neves had the final word. Deep into stoppage time, he stepped up for the pass from a João Moutinho free kick and smashed it past Emiliano Martínez. A winner on derby day made this one of Neves’ most celebrated goals.
3. Wolves Vs Hull City (15/08/2017, Championship)
Just three games into his Wolves career, Neves showed the championship exactly what he was about. Picking up the ball outside of the Hull box, he unleashed a 30-yard rocket that left the goalkeeper absolutely no chance. It was his first goal in English football, a statement of intent, delivered with his now trademark power and precision. It didn’t just win the game, it made headlines and introduced a star in the making.
2. Wolves Vs Espanyol (20/02/2020, Europa League)
Under the Molineux lights on a European night, Neves produced a moment of pure magic. An Adama Traoré cross was cleared, which Neves controlled with his chest and hit perfectly on the volley, again outside of the box. The ball dipped and swerved past the Espanyol Keeper, sending the Molineux crowd into raptures. Wolves won 4-0, and the goal marked Wolves’ return to European knockout rounds after a 40-year absence.
1. Wolves Vs Derby County (11/04/2018, Championship)
No Surprises here, it had to be this one. This goal remains one of the greatest ever scored at Molineux. With Wolves on the brink of promotion, Neves capped off a 2-0 win with a volley so outrageous, it defied belief. As the ball looped towards him, he flicked it up to himself and hit it on the volley from 30 yards out. A thunderous dipping rocket that flew into the top corner. It was pure theatre. Even Derby fans applauded it. It wasn’t just a goal, it was a ‘moment’ one which will be forever etched in Wolves folklore.
From Championship battles to European nights, Neves consistently delivered moments that left fans speechless. His long-range strikes weren’t just highlight reel fodder; they were defining moments in Wolves’ rise and evolution. Now plying his trade for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Neves’ legacy in Old Gold is unshakable. And whether it was a looping volley or a free kick, each goal told a story of ambition, of belief, and brilliance from a midfielder who made the spectacular routine.

Cardiff nuff said.
The Cardiff free kick to basically seal the league was important.
As great as the Derby one was I love the Villa free kick to win 3-2
Derby obviously the best but the Cardiff and Villa free kicks are my favourite.
