United in Crisis: Amorim’s Stubbornness May Cost Him His Job

Following Manchester City’s 3-0 demolition of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim was quick to defend his philosophy of play. Will it be the beginning of his downfall at the club?

“It’s not a record that you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things that you have no idea what happened during these months, but I accept that. But I’m not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man. So, we’ll talk about that every game, every game that we lose. ‘I don’t believe in that, in the system’, or whatever. So, I play my way and I’m going to play my way until I want to change.”

The defeat at the Etihad Stadium means that United have picked up just four points from four games, which is nowhere near good enough for a club like Man United.

One glaring error that Amorim seems to be making is putting the United Captain, who traditionally plays as a Number 10, in the Number 8 position.

Why would you do that when you already have someone like Kobbie Mainoo, who is quite capable of playing that role?

For the Red Devils not to buy a proper Defensive Midfielder and leave Fernandez out to dry in a game like this is suicide.

Surely Enzo Maresca and Chelsea will be licking their lips for Saturday night, and asking Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer to run at United’s Midfield, as it’s so easy to create chances against their fragile defence.

However long it takes before Amorim is sacked, there are serious questions that need to be asked about the board hiring him in the first place.

Manchester United had hardly played a back three before Amorim came in, and sometimes it can be really hard to change the DNA of a club of this magnitude.

As talented of a Manager Amorim is, he should have sussed that out by now.

Besides facing Chelsea on Saturday, Brentford and Sunderland are the next set of fixtures for the Red Devils.

For Amorim to convince the fans and doubters that he is the right man for the job, he needs to prove it on the pitch.

It may just be a matter of changing the personnel rather than the system, but for him to survive, he must do something different.

Can he get United back on track, or is this the beginning of the end for Amorim?
