AS Roma’s decision to bring back Claudio Ranieri for a third spell has proven to be a masterstroke. Under his management, Roma have transformed from relegation contenders to fighting for a European place. They have won their last five Serie A matches and remain unbeaten in their last eight. The experienced Italian has reignited the passion within the club, but his tenure in the dugout is set to be short-lived.

Ranieri, now 73, has ruled out staying on as Roma’s manager next season, instead opting for a director’s role. With his imminent departure, the pressure is on The Friedkin Group to find the perfect successor to maintain Roma’s resurgence. So, who are the leading candidates to replace Ranieri, and who should ‘I Giallorossi’ appoint?

The Leading Candidates

Maurizio Sarri

The former Napoli, Juventus and Lazio boss is among the frontrunners for the Roma job. Sarri’s Napoli side played some of the best football Serie A has seen in recent years, though he has struggled to replicate that success since. His high-pressing, possession-based style could appeal to Roma. However, his history with Lazio will likely make his appointment controversial among the fanbase.

Gian Piero Gasperini

Currently managing Atalanta, Gasperini has built one of the most exciting attacking teams in Italy. Atalanta have consistently competed for European places under his guidance, even winning the Europa League last season. However, concerns remain about how his demanding coaching style would fit within Roma’s squad. The situation with Ademola Lookman at Atalanta highlights potential dressing room tensions, something Roma cannot afford after Ranieri’s unifying influence.

Carlo Ancelotti

Roma legend Francesco Totti has publicly expressed his desire for Ancelotti to take over. The Real Madrid manager has previously spoken of his strong affinity for the club, of which he captained back in 1985. However, whether he would leave the Spanish giants for Roma is another matter. While an ideal choice on paper, prising Ancelotti away from Madrid seems highly unlikely.

Stefano Pioli

After guiding AC Milan to the Scudetto in 2022, Pioli has the experience of managing a top Italian club under pressure. With his future at Milan uncertain, he could be a realistic target for Roma, especially if The Friedkin Group prioritises Serie A experience.

Other Names Ruled Out?

The club appears to have ruled out younger, inexperienced managers like Francesco Farioli and Cesc Fàbregas. The latter, despite being linked to the role, is a minority owner at Como and unlikely to leave his project behind. Also, The Friedkin Group seems to be favouring a seasoned professional with a proven track record.

What Do Roma Fans Want?

Roma supporters are split, but the consensus is clear: they want an experienced, resilient coach who can handle the high pressure of managing in Rome. Many fans are still hoping to convince Ranieri to stay, while others back the likes of Gasperini, Ancelotti or even Antonio Conte.

Ranieri himself is reportedly advising the club to go for an established name with strong leadership qualities. However, with managerial changes expected at AC Milan, Atalanta and potentially even Inter, Juventus and Napoli, Roma’s hierarchy might be waiting for the dust to settle before making their move.

The Friedkin Group’s Next Move

One thing is for sure: Roma’s owners cannot afford to make another mistake. Past mistakes, such as hiring Ivan Jurić or prematurely parting ways with Daniele De Rossi, have set the club back. This appointment needs to be a long-term solution – someone capable of finally challenging for Serie A titles and ensuring Roma’s continued resurgence under their American ownership.
