After Championship side Wrexham knocked Nottingham Forest out on penalties, after a pulsating 3-3 draw, National League Macclesfield Town pulled off a sensational victory over Crystal Palace. Today, we discuss what makes the FA Cup so special.

Though Palace and Forest put out slightly weaker teams, you would still expect them to beat those sides.

But credit to the character of Wrexham and Macclesfield, who showed a lot of character, to pull off those big wins.

Let’s also not forget that Oliver Glasner’s side were the holders of this competition, so to knock them out in the third round is a huge achievement for John Rooney’s side.

Don’t TAKE YOUR OPPONENTS FOR Granted

What was so impressive about the Championship and National League sides was how they coped with the physical nature of both Premier League clubs and outsmarted them.

Rooney’s side took advantage of a struggling Palace, who had no wins in eight games.

Arthur Okonkwo was the hero for Wrexham, as he saved two penalties from Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson to book the Red Dragons’ spot in the fourth round.

These two results prove why the FA Cup is so special, as it gives lower-league sides a chance to see where they stand against the top sides.

It gives them the opportunity to create their own history by beating them and knocking them out of the competition.

According to BBC Sport, the prize money for winning a third-round tie is £121,500.

For teams in the Championship and below, this is huge.

It allows all teams from England and Wales the opportunity to grow by testing themselves against the best.

That’s why this competition is so prestigious.

For Wrexham and Macclesfield Town, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, there is their version of an FA Cup Final.

That’s why the bigger teams need to think twice before deciding on their playing XI.

a proud day for the Rooneys

John Rooney, younger brother of Wayne, was delighted with his team’s outstanding performance at the Leasing.com Stadium.

“It’s mad to say, but I thought we were the deserved winners on the day. I thought we were incredible, every one of them from the subs to the starting 11.”

Given that this is his first job in his managerial career, the way he was able to outsmart Glasner is remarkable.

Crystal Palace are a better side, when they don’t have as much possession of the ball. today it was Macclesfield who allowed them to have most of the ball, and made it extremely difficult to break them down.

You could argue that Palace weren’t at their best, but the desire and commitment from Rooney’s side, was just outstanding.

A smiling Wayne gave high praise to his brother’s managerial masterclass against the holders.

“It’s incredible to see my younger brother achieve this, he has not long been the manager. I am so proud of him

To hear this from someone so close to you, it must give him so much confidence going forward.

This is also another strength of the FA Cup, it allows young talents, i.e., player/coaches, the opportunity to showcase the skills they have developed over a short period of time.

Coming back to the shocks of the Third round, Championship side Sheffield United were beaten 4-3 by League One’s Mansfield Town.

So this proves that anyone can beat anyone on any given day, particularly when the stronger side is not at its best.

This is why the FA Cup is regarded as the world’s biggest national competition.
