Nicky Henderson is a six-time champion trainer, most recently in 2019 and is considered one of the greats of British jump racing. Over the decades, he has trained some of the sport’s most well-known names, including Constitution Hill, Sprinter Sacre, Shishkin and Epatante.
Known for his meticulous approach to training and his ability to nurture young talent into winners. Henderson’s influence extends beyond the racecourse, shaping the careers of jockeys, stable staff and owners alike.
2024/25 Woes
Despite his illustrious career, the 2024/25 season was exceptionally difficult. A combination of underperformance, injury and tragic loss left the Seven Borrows team facing unexpected challenges. For the first time since 2008, Henderson failed to secure a Cheltenham Festival winner, a stark reminder of how unpredictable the sport can be.
Some of the season’s disappointments were particularly striking. Constitution Hill, widely regarded as one of the best jumpers of recent times, fell twice in the two big meetings of the year. This was followed up by a worrying fifth in the Irish Champion Hurdle. Such performance sparked debate over whether he could regain his former dominance at the top level.
Stable favourite Sir Gino was sidelined early on due to a potentially life-threatening infection. Perhaps the most heart-wrenching blow came with the death of Shishkin, a six-time Grade 1 winner and longstanding Henderson favourite who died in his box.
Yet, even in a season defined by setbacks, there were moments of hope. Horses such as Jango Baie, Jonbon and Aston Martini delivered some much-needed victories. Their success, though modest compared to the losses, provided a glimmer of optimism heading into the new season.

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, Henderson appears well placed to return to the upper echelons of the Trainers Championship. On paper, the stable boasts a stronger and deeper string than last year, which should inspire confidence among owners, jockeys and fans.
This season also sees some notable additions to Seven Barrows. Henderson welcomes Ginny’s Destiny, Act of Innocence, Don’t Tell Su and Old Park Star from Paul Nicholls, reflecting a significant shift in loyalty of owners Gordon and Su Hall. Such transfers indicate that, despite a difficult year, Henderson remains highly respected and an attractive option for owners.
The anticipated return of Sir Gino offers further opportunities for Henderson to target the big race. Lulamba is another horse expected to challenge for major honours over the 2-mile distance. Horses like Jeriko Du Reponet look like they will be in the winners’ enclosure soon.

Henderson’s blend of proven Grade 1 winners and exciting new talent means that his stable could deliver a mix of headline-grabbing victories. The challenge of last season has tested the resilience of Henderson and his Seven Barrows team.
As always, Nicky Henderson’s approach combines meticulous preparation, careful horse management, and an instinct for placing runners where they can succeed. While the upcoming season is unlikely to be without its trials, the combination of seasoned champions, promising newcomers and new additions will make his team fascinating to watch. Racing fans will be eager to see if Constitution Hill can win the Fighting Fifth early on in the season and if Sir Gino can return to the course.
There are many questions for Henderson and the horses he trains to answer, will he?
This will be part of a running series. Last time we looked at Paul Nicholls. Check back soon for Dan Skelton.
