Super Featherweight Boxer Mikey Garcia has announced that he will be returning to the sport of Boxing, as he plans to end his 2 year lay off.
Garcia has been away from Boxing since his victory over Juan Carlos Burgos way back in 2014, but now it has been confirmed that he is returning to fighting. Over his career (so far) he has claimed some good victories over solid fighters such as Orlando Salido and Roman Martinez, and his record stands at 34-0. The 2 year lay off that he has endured hasn’t damaged his fitness too much as he has stayed in shape at his brothers gym. Now its just a matter of shaking off some ring rust that has set in.
The card that Garcia is returning on is the Carl Frampton v Leo Santa Cruz undercard, and he will be facing former WBC featherweight champion Elio Rojas who has also had a 2 year absence from the sport. Garcia is the favourite but Rojas is a solid fighter, and this is a bout that could come down to who has been affected less by the lay off’s and who has the less ring rust.
It appears that Mikey is looking ahead to other bouts, perhaps keeping one eye on Rojas and looking for the more glamorous occasions. In interviews he has stated that he wants the undefeated WBO world Lightweight champion Terry Flanagan and Ukranian Vasyl Lomachenko. He’s certainly eager to get back to fighting the best and personally I would give him a good chance against both of these fighters. Garcia could become a real force in the feather/lightweight division again.
