Pape Sarr AFCON’s participation is in doubt as he suffered a hamstring injury against Bournemouth

Pape Matar Sarr and young striker Alejo Veliz were carted off the field inconsolably after suffering injuries in Tottenham Hotspur’s last 2023 encounter, despite the team’s eventual victory. After a half hour, Sarr was taken out of the game with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and Veliz left the game with a knee injury.

There is some uncertainty regarding the Senegal international’s participation in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations, set to begin in the Ivory Coast in just thirteen days, due to his hamstring injury. He appeared distressed as he made his way off the field, and he was trying to conceal his emotions by covering them with his shirt.

During the previous Africa Cup of Nations, which took place in Cameroon two years ago, Senegal won their first-ever continental championship. Sarr was a member of Senegal’s squad for that tournament, but he contributed only once to the team’s victory over Burkina Faso in the semi-final.

During the ninth minute of the game, Sarr scored the first goal, which was a fantastic way to start the afternoon. However, the injury prevented the 21-year-old midfielder from completing the first half. Among those who offered Sarr comfort were the manager of Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou, and the captain, Son Heung-min.

After the break, Son and Richarlison scored goals for the Spurs, which propelled them to victory in the game that took place on Sunday. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott scored a late consolation goal for the visiting team. They sit in fifth place in the table as a result of the result, just one point behind their fierce rivals Arsenal, who are in fourth place. With Tottenham’s victory, the Gunners’ 2-1 loss to Fulham came as a shock.

After the game, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou spoke about the injuries. He didn’t say much about the current status of either player, but he did express his optimism that Sarr’s injury wouldn’t be too severe to prevent him from playing.

Ivan Perisic (knee), Cristian Romero (hamstring), Micky van de Ven (hamstring), and James Maddison (ankle) are among the other players who are currently being treated for injuries at Tottenham. Sarr is the most recent player to sustain an injury. According to Postecoglou, Sarr has strained his hamstring.

“Hard to say. Pape felt his hamstring, and he’s emotional because he wants to go away with his national team. It’s a big tournament for them. It’s kind of the way our season has gone. He was so good again early in the game, apart from his goal, and then he got an injury.

Disappointing for him, but I am hoping it is not too serious and he can still go away and contribute to his country.

Alejo was in a lot of pain, and we’d already done our substitutions, so we were trying to get it out to him to just lay down so we could get him off, but it just shows the character of the boy because he knew we had no more substitutions and he just wanted to keep going. I’m not sure the extent of what he’s done, but we’ll find out.”
