It was an exciting weekend in League Two, with Newport County moving closer to safety with a 2–1 win over Harrogate Town. Nathaniel Opoku and Joe Thomas found the net to secure the win, as 4,337 fans at Rodney Parade witnessed a memorable display.
First half
The first half saw Newport County start strong, with Harrison Biggins coming inches away from opening the home side’s account. Newport would eventually get the opening goal, with Ben Lloyd assisting Opoku, who took his chance well. The County kept threatening, but it was Jack Evans who made it all square and wrestled back momentum for his side. Harrogate finished the first 45 strongly. Yet, going into the break, it was all even. The clash was poised for an intriguing second half.
Second half
Newport came out with intent, attacking with confidence, and Lloyd proved a constant threat, unsettling the defence throughout. For a brief moment, the defence blinked, allowing Joe Thomas to capitalise, burying the ball in the top corner with a powerful shot. 58 minutes into the game, Newport had taken the lead. In midfield, Cameron Evans was eager, and Sven Sprangler was composed, working hard to keep their side on top.
Harrogate were hunting for an equaliser, but Newport held firm. Matt Baker made some key interventions. Lee Jenkins and Ryan Delaney were solid at the back, while Jared Wright was a commanding presence in goal. The visitors had chances late on, but it wasn’t enough in a display where County’s heart was on full display. They were much-needed three points as we reach the business end of the season.
Stats and league standings
Despite slightly fewer touches on the ball (48% possession), Newport used it effectively and stayed competitive throughout. Harrogate, however, dictated the tempo with 275 passes, showing their control in key moments. Lloyd had an exceptional performance, tallying an assist, making three tackles, and completing 20 of 26 passes. Joe Thomas also had a great game. For Harrogate, Jack Evans put in a stellar display.
It was a vital win for Newport, as they now sit four points clear of the relegation zone. They will now prepare to take on Cheltenham Town away, as the final games against Oldham Athletic and Barrow approach. Harrogate will get ready to take on Colchester, Walsall, and Barnet.
Survival is the only goal, and neither side can afford to falter. As the season reaches its climax, every moment will matter, and every result could define their fate.
