Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs) is now targeting Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson’s WBC and The Ring light heavyweight titles, having successfully defended his WBO and acquired the IBF and WBA (Super) light heavyweight titles against Bernard Hopkins last week in a lopsided 12-round decision win.
The Russian, who now holds three of the four light heavyweight world titles, has now set his sights on unifying the division if a fight against Stevenson can be agreed.
The only belt Kovalev doesn’t have is the one that Adonis Stevenson (24-0-1, 20 KOs) holds. A fight between the two more than makes sense.
But should the fight fail to take place, Kovalev will take a different direction.
Krusher is aware that Stevenson could decide against the bout, even though WBC champ had agreed to face the winner of Hopkins v Kovalev.
“Yes I would like to get WBC title. I don’t know what will be in the future,” Kovalev said.
“Right now it is the job of my promoter and manager. For me it doesn’t matter: I just need to get one more title.”
“We are interested in the WBC title. We will fight whoever will be holding that title.
At the end of the day if Stevenson decides against taking a unification fight against Kovalev, the fight will not happen; it’s as simple as that.
“That is who we will be aiming for, said Kovalev’s manager Egis Klimas.
“If someone had told me earlier this year that Sergey would fight Bernard Hopkins and earn two more titles I would have asked them what are they were smoking. Things change every day. We are working towards becoming undisputed champion.”
Stevenson’s next appearance is penciled in for December 19 against Russian Dmitry Sukhotsky. His challenger has been the winner of four straight bouts with his last defeat coming in July 2012, to Cornelius White.
Once that fight is out of the way, negotiations for the unification bout can get under way and the picture will become clearer whether the fight will be made or not.
Since Stevenson captured the WBC belt in 2013, he has gone on to beat Tavoris Cloud, Tony Bellew, and Andzej Fonfara.
