Chelsea: Premier League Struggles & Midfield Concerns

Cole Palmer is setting the Premier League on fire with his brilliant performances this season. He became the first-ever player in the Premier League to score four goals in the first half, which he did against Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend in Chelsea’s 4-2 win.

At least one of Palmer’s four goals was a screamer that would have made any player proud. The 22-year-old already has six goals and four assists from eight matches this season for the Royal Blues, and those numbers are likely to shoot up further as the season progresses.

Cole Palmer has not been playing on his preferred right flank for Chelsea this season:

It seems inconceivable that Palmer has racked up those numbers while playing most matches this season as the No. 10 instead of his preferred right flank. While people like Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho have played on the flanks, Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, the centre-forward, have done their jobs wonderfully well to take Chelsea to the fourth position in the league table, with only a couple of points separating them with the table-toppers Liverpool.

The former Manchester City player stands out for his ability to finish exceedingly well with his left foot. Aside from his passing and easy grace, the ability to shoot well almost always puts him in good stead.

Palmer was convicted the PFA Young Player of the Year last season, scoring 25 times for Chelsea in 45 matches. If his recent form is anything to go by, he will probably surpass those numbers this season.

With some very capable colleagues by his side, Palmer has made the Royal Blues one of the most exciting teams in England. Chelsea have scored 15 goals in six matches in the Premier League this season, the highest by any club in it.

Palmer should get a lot of credit for that, and debates have already started on whether he has an even better-left foot than Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka do now. He was also impressed at the European Championships in Germany last season, and many believed that he should have gotten more game time in the tournament.

He probably has staked the claim to be the first-choice No. 10 for the Three Lions, even considering the presence of Jude Bellingham. The English supporters will pin their hopes on the young man for at least the next decade.
