Rain Causes Stop-Start Day In Sydney

Honours were shared as rain would heavily affect the progress of play on Day 1 of the Sydney test.

Team News

Australia made 1 change to their line-up from last week’s test in Melbourne with Usman Khawaja coming into the middle order as Travis Head has tested positive for Covid.

England also made one change with Stuart Broad coming in for Ollie Robinson, the latter having played all 3 games so far.

Australia: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon

England: Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first.

Morning Session

After a half-hour delay due to some morning rain, there has been a stop-start nature to the session with only 12.2 overs bowled with Australia sitting on 30/0 as lunch was taken early – Warner (pictured below) and Harris getting to 15 and 11 not out respectively.

Afternoon Session

Australia would move onto 51 before Warner would be caught by Crawley off the bowling of Broad (pictured below) for 30 with the rain returning with the score on 56/1 with just 9.2 overs completed in this mini-session – Harris and Labuschagne sitting on 14 and 0 respectively.

Evening Session

The score would move to 111 before Harris (pictured below) would be caught at slip by Root off the bowling of Anderson for 38 with Labuschagne following soon after, caught behind by Buttler off the bowling of Wood, for 28. The rain would return and the day would end after 46.5 overs with Smith and Khawaja finishing 6 and 4 not out respectively.
